If Tchaikovski can dance, why can’t we?
I’m beginning to think that these live-relays are Not a Good Idea.
The dancers are under too much pressure to be perfect. And cannot take the risk of Dancing.
Last night, a case in point - the premiere of the Nutcracker at Covent Garden.
No-one seemed to be actually DANCING except Tchaikovski, followed by Muntagirov and Sambé who somehow amongst all the tinsel, listened to the score.
Everyone else was on Best Behaviour, most unfortunate for an adult.
Peter Wright’s version of the choreography has, moreover, been tweaked over the years – the energy-levels have been revved up to mind-boggling proportions, which no-one can sustain over three hours.
I would add that his choreography for the character dances is appalling.
The Spanish dance is a bad joke, the Chinese dance bears not the faintest resemblance to what was apparently, the original, and so forth. Where were Ratmansky and Fullington when we needed them?
The large ensembles need to be filmed from above, for the floor patterns, which is not something film director Ross McGibbon generally cares much for. We therefore saw a corps de ballet which appeared to be dancing small, on a picture-postcard or within Ross Stretton’s Chocolate Box, although they were probably dancing big.
As I believe this was the Clara’s (Anna Rose O’Sullivan) first live relay, and she was a bundle of nerves throughout Act I, it would be ridiculous to comment.
The Sugar Plum Fairy was Marianela Nunez, Covent Garden’s big star, given virtually every lead in all relays over the past few years. Despite one’s respect for her enormously hard work and commitment, can one properly describe her as a classical dancer? The poor girl has done so much Forsythe and McGregor - and so competently - that she punches out an arabesque penchée à la McGregor, flipping the leg up instead of leaning into the body-shape; et tout le reste à l'avenant.
It is all energy, all power, all gleaming muscle and sinew to background music - all very 2018. The instant’s eerie indecision, the doubt … that strangeness which divides the artist, from the superb executant, well, seek not here. Marianela, despite her delightful personality, sums up within herself what the age of the GAFAs has done to the Optative, the Putative and the Subjunctive Moods, that grey area of “in my end, is my beginning”.
To my mind, the most important is this: Tchaikovski was a genius. His scores do the dancing for you. Why pack steps into every demi-semi-hemi quaver of the score when he's already done most of the work? When in doubt about what steps to choreograph, take your orders from him.
Lastly but not leastly (I shall stop going to live-relays unlessd this be sorted), the sound-levels at the Louxor were Rock-Concert loud. The entire audience was complaining, and some left after 20 minutes with splitting headache. Note to cinema-owners: opera and ballet performances are not Heavy Metal. Saving your Grace.

No condescension.
Doubtless wrong place and wrong time to debate what is meant by classicism.
(Although perhaps we can agree to exclude turning oneself into a pretzel?)
Example of what I would call classical dancing - although the choreographic text is of course different from Peter Wright's
Gelsey Kirkland - small, plain, scrawny, and prey to major health issues at the time ... BUT, this is classical dancing:
at 1:04 (one hour and four minutes). The Nutcracker

And at 16:05 minutes here
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y5f8sG5lQjs
in Giselle, Act II. The musical timing, the footwork ... mind-boggling.
