Dansomanie exclusive interview with MANUEL LEGRIS!!!
It’s still long time before the curtain goes up for the Legris Gala in Japan coming august 2017, Dansomanie en japonais has been given a chance to interview Manual Legris by email. He kindly answered my questions and, though it is in English and it is for Japanese audiences, I would like to share it with you here.
I. This gala has a subtitle "un destin... 'La Danse'." Is this the theme of this gala?
It's more that I wanted clearly to say to the audience. My clear destiny was to be a dancer and I'm still there today to give my passion to this art and to share one more time a moment together
II. How did you chose the cast? It's not all the Wiener dancers like that of the last year in Okinawa.
I choose the people with whom I have a special feeling and relation. Unfortunately there is no dancers from Paris Opera this time because they were touring with another producer before. All of the dancers beside me are precious and I will be happy to share these performances with them.
III. Is this the first time to work with Vadim Muntagirov? And Olga Smirnova?
No, I invite Vadim Muntagirov in Vienna to dance my Corsaire and he did also the opening night of the same ballet last week in Madrid with my company.
Olga Smirnova will come also this season with Semyon Chudin for Swan Lake in Vienna.
Marianella Nuñez will complete this quatuor of stars with Semyon Chudin. When I watch all of them dancing I really know and understand why I love ballet.
IV. I think you are still developing the idea for the program. Could we know some of your ideas or the piece confirmed?
Too early to say but I will do my best to present a program with pieces which are expected by the audience and some new works
V. How many pieces you will be dancing? I hope that I could see you dance the piece we haven't seen recent years.
I haven’t decided yet the number of pieces that I will dance but I can tell you that I will dance with Isabelle Guérin.
VI. For Nureyev's Raymonda which was shown from 22nd December at the Wiener Staatsoper: It's a very big, not easy production and I'm wondering what has made you to decide to do it. Though it has been in the repertoire of the Staatsoper but if you do you would require quite a high level of dancing to all the dancers. You thought it would be a good timing for your dancers?
Raymonda was in the repertory of Vienna but not presented for the last more than 15 years in the complete version. The company has the complete legitimacy to do it as they are really strong and ready for this kind of repertory. I'm now working with them for 7 years. It was a clear choice to show the quality of my soloists and of all the dancers of the company in this ballet . It was an important challenge to stage this ballet myself with my ballet masters and to have the chance to invite Jean Guizerix to teach the part of Abdheram. he was the original cast of this role.
No doubt that the company is strong, in less than 15 days they were able to do Raymonda in Vienna, Le Corsaire in Madrid for 5 performances and the revival of la Fille Mal gardée in Vienna. All these performances were under a great level of presentation and highly successful.
VII. Also please introduce Jakob Feyferlik to us who will dance the role of Jean de Brienne on the first night with Nina Poláková.
Jakob Feyferlik is a very young and talented dancer. He is only 20 years old and has a great potential. He is Austrian, I took him from our school and was jumping from the corps to Soloist directly at the end of the last season. The Japanese will like him a lot without any doubt. He is with some other dancers the future of the company. I'm happy to have found a new generation of dancers in Vienna and beside Nina Polakova, Denis Cherevychko and Davide Dato who are first soloist you will discover my new other soloists Natascha Mair, Nikisha Fogo and Nina Tonoli.
VIII. The last question, is the Japan Tour of the Wiener Staasoper Ballet planned in coming years? We are so much expecting to see your company and hopefully your "le Corsaire."
I really hope to present my company soon in Japan and why not with Le Corsaire.
- End –
Please be patient, some photos are coming soon.
