ニュージーランドのスレッドを作りましょう。
2011年9月に、ABTのイーサン・スティーフェルがロイヤル・ニュージーランド・バレエ (RNZB) の芸術監督に就任しますので、今後ニュースが増えてくるかもしれないですものね。

1ヶ月以上前の記事なのですが、英ガーディアン紙に、Judith Mackrell によるイーサン・スティーフェルのインタビューがあります。

スティーフェルのRNZB芸術監督応募の後押しをしたのは、実はヨハン・コボーだったそうで、就任が決まった今、仲良しの友でもあり、共に振付家としても活動しているコボーには、大いに協力してもらうつもりのようです。 『ジゼル』 の改訂版について既にたくさん話し合っているとか。
RNZBは、ダンサーが32名とかなり小規模なカンパニーで、大掛かりな古典のプロダクションを上演することが難しいこと、ニュージーランド国内のツアーも行わなければいけないこと、才能ある振付家を生み出すことはできても外に出て行ってしまうこと （世界から孤立している感じてしまうことが要因） なども、スティーフェルが取り組まなければならない主な課題としてあるようですね。
ニュージーランド国外から専任としてRNZBの芸術監督に就任するのは、1953年にカンパニーを創設した Paul Gnatt 以来二人目。 Paul Gnatt は、元デンマーク・ロイヤル・バレエのプリンシパルダンサーで、休暇で訪れたニュージーランドを気に入り、そのまま移住してしまったのだそうです。 今回同じRDB出身のヨハン・コボーが間接的とはいえ関わるというのは、何かの縁かもしれないと記事には書いてあります。
というわけで、同じく記事にも書かれていますが、スティーフェルが芸術監督、ご夫人のジリアン・マーフィーもRNZBで踊りますし、それに、ヨハン・コボーとアリーナ・コジョカルが加わったら、けっこうすごいことになりそうですね。

すいませ～ん。 ジリアン・マーフィーをイーサン・スティーフェルの "ご夫人" と書いてしまいましたが、まだ "フィアンセ" でしたね。 先走ってしまいました。
さて、ニューヨークタイムズ紙に Gia Kourlas によるスティーフェルへのインタビューが載りました。 写真に二人の飼い猫アビシニアンの Selah も写ってるのですが、この子が何とも 役者！ だわ。 かわい～。

ガーディアンのインタビューよりも具体的なことが書かれています。
芸術監督に就任して最初の上演するのは、『眠れる森の美女』。 ABTからソリストのステラ・アブレラがゲスト出演するそうです。 それから、New York-centric イヴニングとして、バランシンの 「Who cares?」、Larry Keigwin とバンジャマン・ミルピエによる新作 「28 Variations of a Theme By Paganini」 も上演する予定。 そのほかのバランシン作品にも取り組むほか、アシュトンやロビンズ、トワイラ・サープの作品も上演していきたいそうです。 また、コボーとの共作として計画している 『ジゼル』 は、2012年になるようですね。
もちろんカンパニーを牽引してレベルアップを図っていくことは絶対に必要なことですが、それだけでなく、ニュージーランドのダンスのアイデンティティを確立することもやらなければならないことで、それはチャレンジでもありチャンスでもあるとスティーフェルは語っています。
ジリアン・マーフィーは、RNZBで踊るだけでなく、コーチもするようです。 が、"Ethan Stiefel-Gillian Murphy show" にするつもりもないし、私達はそういうタイプではないと言っています。
面白かったのは、この夏、スティーフェルはNYで極真空手を習ってたそうなんですよ。 でもって、極真空手の全米オープン大会でファイトアナウンサーをやったんだそうです。 ただ、まだ舞台から退くわけではないみたいなんですけどね。 ほっ。
そのほか、ジリアン・マーフィーにプロポーズしたときのエピソードとかも明らかにしてますよ！

Over the years Mr. Stiefel, a youthful 38, has consistently raised eyebrows around the ballet world for his out-of-left-field professional moves. Before taking the reins of the 32-member Royal New Zealand Ballet — which he likes to call an adventure — he was dean of the School of Dance for the University of North Carolina School of the Arts, artistic director of Ballet Pacifica in California and the star of the 2000 film “Center Stage.” He’s even appeared in an episode of “Gossip Girl.”
But taking over the Royal New Zealand Ballet is also a natural progression for him. It helps too that Mr. Stiefel has family in New Zealand; his grandmother was born and raised there. And he’s certainly held his share of leadership positions. After Mr. Stiefel’s experience in North Carolina — where he spent more time writing education policies than in the studio — the creative side of the new post is a plus. “I see my job as not only building the art and the company but building the identity of dance in New Zealand, which is an opportunity,” he said. “You don’t always have that. Other places are established, and know how they want to do it.” |

イーサン・スティーフェルとヨハン・コボーによる 『ジゼル』 の初日まであと5日！ 新たなニュースが入ってきました。 この 『ジゼル』 は収録され、リハーサルなどの舞台裏の映像と共に、映画館で上映されるそうです。 この記事では時期や地域などはわかりませんが、映像があるということになりますので、もしかしたら、いつかどこかで何らかの形で見られるかもしれませんよね。

Johan Kobborg and I have both performed the lead male role of Albrecht many times, so it’s a an honour to be able to present our unique vision of one of the most dramatic and beautiful ballets to the stage and then to also have it adapted for film,’ says Ethan Stiefel, Artistic Director, RNZB.
Giselle the film will be produced by Matthew Metcalfe (Dean Spanley, Love Birds), and directed by the acclaimed filmmaker Toa Fraser (No.2, Dean Spanley). It will capture performances, rehearsals and much more. |
