http://www.danceeurope.net/docs/EXCERPTS/2004vote.shtml.
Dans l'intérêt de Glasnost', pour ainsi dire, je me permets de reproduire ci-dessus mes réponses aux questions du sondage.
“The choice of M. Emmanuel Thibault is self-evident, as he is one of the few truly great classical dancers in the world today, and, if Fortune smile upon us, Myriam Ould Braham looks to follow in his footsteps.
I have voted for Nathalia Ashikhmina, formerly of the Perm State Theatre, now of Ballet Internationale (sic) at Indianapolis in the USA, because it is very difficult to maintain so high a standard of purity and refinement, in so isolated and itinerant a position.
I have voted for Bertrand Courtot de Bouteiller as my first choice for Artistic Director, because he - or Michel Denard - should be the head of the Ballet National de Marseille now, and not the multi-media architect from Charleroi who, for some mysterious and un-dance-related reason, was selected.
I have voted for Dance Theatre of Harlem as my first choice, because neither the demise of this critically-important institution, nor that of its School, can be accepted by any country with a shred of morality.
I have voted for Alexei Ratmanski, because he is young, full of energy, devoted to the classical dance, and respectful of his dancers, and I hope he may do something for Russia.
I have voted for American Ballet Theatre, because ballet masters like Kirk Peterson, through their work on authors such as Fokine, are attempting to restore the true meaning behind the steps. And because they let people like Frederick Franklin, who is now ninety, not only to dance, but also to teach.
And finally, I have voted for Ib Andersen, because I think that here in Europe, we do not imagine what a struggle is being put up for the European tradition of the ballet, in far-off nooks and crannies of the USA.”

|
|
The mystery of how such a beautiful dancer as Natalia Ashikhmina turned up in the snowbound depths of Indiana, USA, is now elucidated, somewhat.
According to today’s LA Times, the little-known Indiana-based troupe called “Ballet Internationale” (ex-Indianapolis Ballet Theatre), that Mlle. Ashikhmina joined in August 2004, is actually headed by Eldar Aliev, former principal dancer at the Maryinskii Theatre. Irina Kolpakova is the troupe’s assistant artistic director, and Vladilen Semenov, former premier danseur at the Maryinskii and professor at the Vaganova School, now heads the troupe’s Academy.
So, with that line-up at the top, choosing someone of the calibre of Mlle. Ashikhmina was, one imagines, as easy as falling off a log...
