The 11th World Ballet Festival au Japon

This summer, the 11th World Ballet Festival will take place in Tokyo. Since it's announced that Aurélie Dupont, Agnès Letestu, Manuel Legris, José Martinez and Nicolas le Riche are going to dance in this festival, I'd like to give some information here from Japan. (Thank you, haydn! )

The World Ballet Festival is a very big performance held every three years since 1976 by NBS, with star dancers from around the world.

This time, 2 programmes (A and B) of gala performance and 4 special full-length programmes will be presented.

The details of the programmes will be announced in late June but it says some of the works will be: Pas de deux from La Dame aux Camélias, La Favorita, Le Corsaire, Tchaikovsky Pas de deux, Petite Mort, Pas de deux from Illusions like "Swan Lake"(Neumeier), Romeo and Juliet, Don Quixote, Manon, Onegin, etc...

Here is the details of Program A and Program B. (The announced programmes are all in japanese and there are some works and choreographer I have never seen nor heard. So I have to guess the name in English and spelling. Sorry if they are not correct... )

Also there are some change in participating dancers. It's announced that Romel Frometa (? sorry, I don't know how to spell.) from National Ballet of Cuba will dance instead of Rolando Sarabia, and Irina Dvorovenko from American Ballet Theatre will participate in.

That is good These are not ordinary gala performances. I am sure that you will have a great time. And if you have a chance to get a seat for GALA on 13th August 2006, I absolutely recommend to take it.

GALA will 'probably (hopefully)' be followed by an extra performance, which may be a hilarious comedy choreographed, produced and presented by dancers. However, this will not be announced until the very last moment. I am not sure now, but, according to the previous festivals, I think they will not let us down.

Last time was Don Quixote superb parody performed by Marcelo Gomes as 'Kitri' (variation of act I), José Martinez as 'la Danseuse de rue', Tamara Rojo as 'Espada' accompanied by Dupont, Vishneva, Alicia Amatriain, Silvia Azzoni, Barbora Kohoutkova and maybe Maria Alexandrova all in toreador look, José Carreño as 'Kitri' (variation with castanet of act I), Vladimir Malakhov as 'Cupid' surrounded by a gorgeous corp de ballet of cupids (Legris, Martinez, Uvarov, Sergei Filin, Gomes, Vogel, Barankiewicz, etc. (I couldn't recognize them all...)). There were also some variations inserted such as 'Talisman' (female solo) by Legris, 'Le Corcaire' (male solo) by Alexandrova and 'dying Sylphide' by Malakhov.

Almost all male dancers performed in point shoes. They have amazing point technique

The 11th World Ballet Festival has begun with the special full-length program Don Quixote yesterday in Tokyo. I did not attend but I hope some of my friends attended would tell me how it was.
