Ruf]

|
|
For a change, I believe we need a statue to honour the living.
Svetlana EFREMOVA
Take a look at this.
There isn't a woman in the world with this level of technique today.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gvum8elaJ3o
and she was still right up there twenty years later.
Efremova is so high up in the body and off the hip, that her feet barely touch the ground. Nonobstant those dire low-vamp shoes.
Every port de bras is perfect - not a hyper-extended elbow or broken wrist.
Her menées (courus) are so tiny, so swift they are quite literally a blur.
Although she is only 5 foot tall, the plastique of the academic figures is ideal.
Unlike quite a few Kirov ballerinas of that time, she does not suffer from FHP (forward head posture) - look at the deep groove down her back with its powerful para-spinatus muscles to see why.
Her variations are very difficult versions of the choreography, so there is, I must acknowledge, some tension in the neck, but hey, Roses have THORNS and this is QUITE SOME ROSE.
Why write thousands of words, argue till one's blue in the face as to WHY CLASSICAL DANCE EXISTS? One glance at this technique and artistry, and THE POINT IS CLEAR.
Vikulov has less fun choreography, very much the Soviet in-your-face versions, but he seems to have all the time in the world in the upper body. And the "Bien Parado" of the tours!
Russia dear, it's back to the drawing board. Get those legs down and stop the stretching, NOW. Guillemitis has wrecked what was once a very great school.

|
|
The Trocks are fantastic.
The thrill, the excitement of the thing, is that they dance far better than most female dancers today - wonderful dancers, respectful of the style in everything they do, and musical - and above all, unlike most female dancers today, with the strength to execute the steps properly without over-turnng out or hyper-extending.
Give or take the IN YOUR FACE tricks and hamming it up, and bearing in mind that classical dance is ALSO supposed to be PLAYFUL for Heaven's sake, one is seeing the steps more or less as women should actually be dancing them.
And as one never sees them danced today.
They probably took it off from this - also FABULOUS version, with Mia Slavenska, then aged about 47 (Yes!!!) dated 1960
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SPugalZ9S_A
ADDENDUM - today, Sunday.
I've actually understood things watching the Trocks, that had escaped me, before.
Classical dancing today is sterile - everything has to be so perfect, so turned out, so hard-pointed, so this, so that - the ECSTASY is gone.
The Trocks just go for it. Their stock-in-trade, is to go for it. If the dancer hears something in the music, an affect, a mood, some proto-idea flittering by, he goes for it.
Each shape, each step in classical dance is supposed to MEAN SOMETHING. Not in isolation, but to the music. The shapes, the steps themselves, carry a meaning which many - most - of us blithely or not so blithely, ignore, because we are expected to be so utterly, boringly perfect.
Yes, the Trocks exaggerate. But that's what art is about - making some tiny motion in the mind legible to other people.
Being over the top, nowadays, is the only way to let the steps and shapes tell us what they were once invented to tell.
These fellows get closer to the source of supply than most of us.
