New York Times の Roslyn Sulcas によると、パリ・オペラ座バレエ 次期芸術監督は、バンジャマン・ミルピエとのこと！
オペラ座からの発表は、本日11:30 (日本時間19:30) の記者会見で行われる予定。

バンジャマン・ミルピエは、ボルドー出身の35歳。 元ニューヨーク・シティ・バレエのプリンシパルで振付家です。 ミルピエは、パリ・オペラ座バレエ学校で学んだことはないようですね。 もちろんオペラ座在籍の経歴もありません。 しかし、オペラ座に作品を振り付けたことがあります。 2009年に上演 （初演は2006？） された 「Amoveo」 とDVD化された 「ジェローム・ロビンズへのオマージュ」 に収められている 「Triade」 です。 また、2014年には新作 「ダフニスとクロエ」 をオペラ座に振り付けることも判明しています。
つい最近、ロサンゼルスに自身のカンパニー L.A. Dance Project を立ち上げたばかりでしたよね。 ダンソマニでもお知らせしてますが、このカンパニーについては設立者としての名前は残して、アドヴァイザーに退くことを考えているようです。

しかし、これら本業よりも彼を一躍有名にしたのは、映画 「ブラックスワン」 に振付家として参加し （ちょこっと出演もしてます。）、主演のナタリー・ポートマンと出会い、男の子を授かって結婚したことでしょう～。 芸術監督就任を機に、パリへ引っ越すそうです。
さて、その問題の任期ですが、どうやら期間が定められていないみたいですね。 "無期限" とはずいぶん思い切った契約の仕方ですが、一番重要なのは、ミルピエの芸術的展望、そして手腕。 あまりにも未知数なだけに、今から批判したりしたくはないですけど、不安だな。。。
[追記・2/17]
教えていただいたのですが、"無期限" という契約は、不始末などがない限り、雇い主側から解雇することができない契約なのだそうです。 （物議を醸してました。） そのため、該当部分の記述を若干修正してあります。

Amoveoの初演は 2006年ですね。
この時はプランフもあってご本人がレッスンを付けていました。
衣装もマーク・ジェイコブスでかなり大々的だったのですが 再演では質素な衣装でガラッと印象が代わり同じ作品とは思えないほどでした。

Quelles sont vos pistes de réflexion actuelles ?
J’ai envie d’encourager les membres de la compagnie motivés ou trop timorés pour s’y risquer à se lancer dans la chorégraphie, ce parent pauvre dans la formation d’un danseur. Comme Bach recopiait les œuvres des maîtres pour en intégrer les structures, on devrait monter des sections de ballets marquants, les analyser, en décortiquer les paramètre de langage, en détail, sur le papier, afin de comprendre comment ils s’inscrivent dans l’histoire de l’art. Sous forme d’ateliers ?
A travers des commandes musicales ambitieuses, j’aimerais soutenir les musiques d’aujourd’hui en renouant avec l’esprit de ce XXe siècle qui, pour le ballet, a produit des partitions majeures pour orchestre symphonique, comme Le Sacre du printemps ou L’Oiseau de feu. Encore faut-il que les compositeurs cessent de considérer la musique de ballet comme un genre mineur pour orchestre de second ordre. Je ne dois pas me contenter d’un taux de remplissage à 98 %.
Comme j’ai commencé à le faire avec le LADP, je projette de monter des « opérations commando » artistiques pointues pour renouveler le public, là où il se trouve. Et je veux veiller à l’épanouissement créatif des danseurs. Actuellement, ils font beaucoup de répétitions, pour un maximum de six ballets par an. Moi, au NYCB, j’en dansais vingt-cinq. |

Des danseurs de grand gabarit, des bras très longs, un port de tête unique, une élégance alliée à la simplicité, une exceptionnelle fluidité corporelle, qui leur permet de passer d'une Sylphide académique à une pièce d'Edouard Lock. Et je rends hommage à Brigitte Lefèvre, qui a su ouvrir la compagnie au répertoire du XXe siècle, avec Jérôme Bel, Pina Bausch ou Robyn Orlin. L'hommage sincère d'un danseur jaloux d'avoir suivi cette épopée de loin, alors que je rêvais de me produire avec ces chorégraphes. Mon action s'inscrit dans cette continuité. |

I’m very lucky, because I’m inheriting a company that can fill the theater with work that is very challenging, which means you can take chances. I believe in the art and craft of ballet, and I want to create an environment for the evolution and knowledge of the ballet idiom. I think what we do with music is very important for ballet. I believe in commissioning scores that can stand on their own in a symphonic hall. At the same time, I think composers and artists who collaborate with choreographers have to love and understand the art of ballet, and I want to create an environment that is welcoming and where they will be present.
If you want the art form to evolve, you need support for the art of choreography. My really big goal is to create an ongoing workshop for dancers who aspire to be choreographers. They would be able to practice, to be taught by guest choreographers, analyze musical compositions, watch rehearsals with the orchestra, understand the complexity of making a work. At the moment, there is very little support for the art of choreography — you dance, then you just try it, and there is no time to fail. I also think it’s important to take ballet out of the opera house, not to wait for the audience to come to you. The dancers could work with artists on an installation, in a museum context, in a train station, on a film. I’d like to find unconventional ways of presenting opera and dance together. There is an elitist element that I want to break. |

Millepied views the political complications with equanimity. He is not afraid of promoting change but insists that he has no plans, as some feared, to steer the company in the direction of contemporary dance.
‘I am excited about the company being about ballet and about creating good ballets. I’m interested in the Paris Opera Ballet being the best company in the world.’ He promises four new ballets in his first season, and since the choreographers he talks admiringly about include Christopher Wheeldon, Wayne McGregor, Justin Peck and Alexei Ratmansky, it would be no surprise to see work from them on the bill.

In Paris he wants to launch a one-year academy course for choreographers, to enable them to expand their interests. ‘To some extent the issue with ballet is that it is an art form that is closed into itself,’ he says. ‘You don’t have to be the most cultured person to be the best dancer. And then these people run companies or teach, which means that there is a circle of the uncurious. If you talk to any opera director you could have a more broad conversation than you can have with a lot of ballet directors.’
This desire to create a place where dancers can learn about art in general is part of Millepied’s instinct to help dance break out of its confines. It is the impulse behind the film company he has founded to make dance films and animations for the internet. ‘I’m not doing it for the sake of being commercial, but because the internet is something you should not take lightly in terms of the audience you can appeal to if you put something good out there.’ |
