John Neumeier, âgé de 62 ans, vient, si l'on en croit le quotidien allemand Die Welt, de signer un nouveau contrat de 5 ans avec le Ballet de Hambourg, à des conditions financières plus avantageuses, qui font un peu jaser.
Neumeier aurait obtenu ce traîtement de faveur en faisant jouer la concurrence. D'après Die Welt, Paris et Londres l'avaient également sollicité pour prendre la direction de leurs compagnies de ballet respectives.

I find the article in Die Welt most interesting.
No matter what one may think about Neumeier's choreography (!), the fact remains, that he's responsible for the career of 50 top-flight dancers that he's personally recruited.
Reading between the lines, one gathers that someone was plannning to lower the boom on the company, and THAT seems to have been the actual issue.
Also, one gathers that Hamburg is now relying on private sponsorship to pay for apprentices to join the company !
Where WILL this all end ? Or rather, WHEN will someone put a stop to this budget slashing ?
One should bear in mind that even ORCHESTRAS are being closed in Germany at the moment, and that the three Berlin ballet troupes, all of considerable repute, have been merged into one, with dozens of high-level people made redundant.
Footnotes to history: Frédéric Flamand's non-dance "dance" troupe at Charleroi, going by the misnomer Charleroi Danses, was getting a subsidy of 3.7 million, I repeat MILLION euros, according to press releases available on the Internet.
The Hamburg troupe, which includes, no matter what one think of its repertoire, a number of fine classical dancers, receives but 7 million euros subsidy for a far larger staff of dancers, technicians, professors, not to speak of a large shoe and costume budget.
I mean, the WORST possible scenario, would be to see the classical dance go up in a puff of smoke in Germany the way it's done in Doulce France, n'est ce pas ?
