Merci, sophia.

In the midst of having a massive Downer ... Infektionsschützgesetz para. 28b waved through Parliament today in what was once Beautiful Germany ...have now had time to look at more of the aforesaid Coppelia with Vinogradov's choreography - it really is APPALLING. One can only imagine the look on Vikharev's face when he saw this recording.
HOWEVER, there is the dancing.
Perhaps someone could enlighten us as to where Vinogradov took the final variation for Coppelia at 1 hr 24 minutes. Natalia Fessenko is simply fantastic - these would be considered men's steps today, it's all jumping, and bloody hard. And she sails through it with great charm.
There are some real sticklers in the variation - at about 1 hr 24 mins. 16 seconds there's what Cecchetti calls sissonne simple (temps levé simple), twice, followed by a jumped I repeat JUMPED grand renversé which is perfectly executed. Then moving on briskly at about 1 hr 25 mins there's soutenu temps levé / soutenu temps levé quatrième ouverte (French school may use different terms?) and again, it's PERFECT. And just plain old bloody hard at that tempo.
N. Fessenko is an extremely proficient, lovely dancer - a credit to what was once a fabulous Russian school.
Demi-caractère - probably wouldn't even get a job today.

Acclaimed filmmaker Sofia Coppola directs a film that will be the centerpiece of NYCB's first-ever virtual gala on May 5, shot on location at the David H. Koch Theater with acclaimed cinematographer Philippe Le Sourd.
Coppola’s film, supported by CHANEL, will feature members of the Company performing five works: a world premiere from Resident Choreographer and Artistic Advisor Justin Peck featuring NYCB Principal Dancer Anthony Huxley set to Samuel Barber’s Adagio for Strings; excerpts from three works by Balanchine — Duo Concertant, featuring NYCB Principal Dancers Ashley Bouder and Russell Janzen; Liebeslieder Walzer, featuring NYCB Principal Dancers Maria Kowroski and Ask la Cour; and the finale of Divertimento No. 15, featuring NYCB Principal Dancers Tiler Peck and Andrew Veyette, Soloists Emilie Gerrity, Lauren King, Ashley Laracey, Unity Phelan, and Daniel Applebaum, and corps de ballet member Andrew Scordato — and a solo from Jerome Robbins’ Dances at a Gathering, featuring NYCB Principal Dancer Gonzalo Garcia.
The musical soundtrack for the film will be performed by New York City Ballet Orchestra members and Company pianists under the direction of NYCB Music Director Andrew Litton |

June 3-17
As a finale to the 2021 digital season, NYCB will stream a complete performance of Balanchine’s Vienna Waltzes. Created in 1977 and set to waltzes by Johann Strauss II, Franz Lehár, and Richard Strauss, this work of grand scale featuring more than 50 dancers is only performed by New York City Ballet.
Through Rouben Ter-Arutunian’s evolving scenery, Ronald Bates’ lighting, and Karinska’s costumes, the last that the famed designer created for the Company, the ballet transforms from a sylvan forest glen to a dance hall to a glittering society café to, at last, a majestic mirrored ballroom.
This performance, which will be available to stream for two weeks on the homepage of nycballet.com and on our YouTube channel at youtube.com/nycballet, was filmed in 2013 and features Rebecca Krohn, Tyler Angle, Megan Fairchild, Anthony Huxley, Erica Pereira, Sean Suozzi, Teresa Reichlen, Ask la Cour, Maria Kowroski and Jared Angle in the principal roles. |
