A Wild Man-Child by Way of the Bolshoi Tears Up the Met Stage, par Alastair Macaulay (The New York Times)

Citation:
The Bolshoi Ballet star Ivan Vasiliev, still in his early 20s, is just what you want a Russian male dancer to be: powerful, ardent, engaging and a bit on the wild side. Even without matinee-idol looks, he has loads of physical charm. His smile is happy, his dark brown hair is none too tidy, there’s a mischievous glint in his eyes, and he’s virile without having completely shaken off his boyishness. Vast though the stage of the Metropolitan Opera House is, he makes it look much too small for comfort when he tears around it. His jumps are out of all proportion to his medium height...

Beer. Nachos. Arena. Ballet?, par Sarah Lyall (The New York Times)

Citation:
The idea was to bring the ballet to the masses, so it was perhaps inevitable that the masses would bring nachos, beer and hot dogs to the ballet. “It feels like you’re in a pop concert,” said Sheila Kiss, 53, a medical researcher, describing the atmosphere at the Royal Ballet’s performance of “Romeo and Juliet” at the massive O2 arena here in East London on Friday night. She was right. The stands were filled with some 10,000 people, including the young, the old and the casually dressed, and in between watching the dancing they were also doing a fair amount of munching, gulping and milling around at unconventional moments...

Romeo and Juliet, The 02, London, par Clement Crisp (The Financial Times)

Citation:
It is an amazing sight. The functional vastness of the O2 auditorium; serried banks of seats, vertiginously raked on three sides of this arena; thousands of spectators; and the Royal Ballet’s Romeo and Juliet on Friday night as the company began a fascinating engagement. And, in these days when ballet troupes must capture a fresh and untapped audience, here is an event that offers every incentive for enjoyment and baptismal enthusiasm. Be it said at once that the public seemed delighted by the performance. This is, inevitably, owed to one of the keys to this presentation: three large screens above the stage, which show the ballet, in views both intimately close and broadly panoramic, as recorded by cameras placed in the middle of the parterre, the action captured with sensitive understanding: a distant spectacle suddenly telly-close for telly-conditioned viewers...

Romeo and Juliet - review, par Sanjoy Roy (The Guardian)

Citation:
"Ballet rocks!" is a phrase increasingly bandied about by enthusiastic dance fans. Ballet has indeed been bursting its opera-house laces, with high-profile appearances in a Kanye West video, in Black Swan ("ballet shocks!") and on the catwalk ("ballet frocks!"). The latest such outing is the Royal Ballet's Romeo and Juliet at the O2 Arena, a cavernous stadium that usually presents the biggest names in rock and pop. It was more a social than an artistic experiment. Kenneth MacMillan's choreography is largely intact, but is bigged up by an amplified orchestra, heightened set and live relay screens (essential for a stadium this size). Filmed vignettes of the dancers serve as intertitles to scene changes, and the whole production – with its declamatory gestures, emotive live music, cutting between crowd scenes and closeups – has the feel of silent cinema...

Romeo and Juliet - review, par Mark Monahan (The Daily Telegraph)

Citation:
The most electrifying moment in the Royal Ballet’s Romeo and Juliet — performed for the first time at the mammoth O2 Arena — came at the end of Act 1, with the lovers’ passionate embrace. As Prokofiev’s romantic maelstrom surged, a close-up of them was projected on to the three enormous screens above the stage that simultaneously relayed the entire performance. Suddenly, although little more than animated specks on stage, the two dancers — veteran, uniquely stirring star-cross’d couple Carlos Acosta and Tamara Rojo – were now very much larger than life. You could see the heaving of their chests, the sweat on his brow, the wideness of her eyes. Legs? Feet? No, none of that. Yet still, it was a fantastically involving spectacle...

Royal Danish Ballet, Lincoln Center, NY, par Apollinaire Scherr (The Financial Times)

Citation:
When this company last visited New York in 1988, Nikolaj Hübbe had just risen from the corps – now he is artistic director. But the Royal Danes are still that rare thing: a classical troupe not descended from imperial Russian ballet. That distinction was wondrously clear in Napoli, Act III and La Sylphide – both by August Bournonville, the 19th-century Dane who put the company on the map. Instead of bravado jumps and turns for the men and displays of leg for the women, lads and ladies alike skimmed the stage in flickery jumps punctuated by a foot’s swipe of the floor or sharp cut to the ankle. The dancers did not stay up or down for long; they maintained a constant lilt. The women perched on point for only an instant, like ballerinas in 19th-century woodcuts, before rolling down through supple feet. This sprightly flux induced joy – thoroughly in Napoli’s wedding dances – as did the wedging of steps in and around the beat...

Don Quixote classic ballet set to dazzle (Artslin - Afrique du Sud)

Citation:
The scintillating ballet classic Don Quixote returns to the SA stage this year for the first time since 1994. For the first time since the mid-1990s South African ballet audiences will be treated to the traditional full-length 3-act version of the great Russian ballet Don Quixote when Mzansi Productions brings the scintillating classic to Johannesburg and Durban later this year. Based on an episode in Cervantes epic novel and set in bustling Seville, the ballet tells a story of the triumph of young love over parental match-making. The beautiful, audacious Kitri and the dashing but poor Basilio are determined to marry but Kitri’s father has more ambitious plans for his daughter. The sparkling comedy unfolds in a cascade of dazzling classical ballet which features some of the most celebrated showpieces in all ballet, the most famous of which is the virtuoso Don Quixote Pas de Deux. The Mzansi Productions staging is based on the original version by the great 19th century choreographer Marius Petipa and will be staged with the assistance of the National Ballet School of Cuba. Also contributing to bringing Don Quixote back to the South African stage will be ballerina Angela Malan, Mzansi Productions’ ballet mistress...

"Der Teufel tanzt mit mir", par Annette Bopp (Die Welt)

Citation:

Was ist hier los?

Nürnberg : Kylian - Duato - Monterol, par Dieter Stoll (Kultiversum)

Citation:
