The 2017/2018 Season of the Hamburg Ballet John Neumeier – An Overview :

During the 2017/2018 season the Hamburg Ballet focuses on “classics”. The highlight of this programming focus is the world premiere of John Neumeier’s ballet Beethoven Project (working title) on June 24, 2018. In anticipation of Ludwig van Beethoven’s 250th birthday, the chief choreographer of the Hamburg Ballet dedicates an evening-length ballet to this truly classical composer for the first time.

On September 17, 2017, during the joint opening weekend of Hamburg Ballet and Hamburg State Opera, the ballet programme features the revival of Chopin Dances. This includes two ballet classics by Jerome Robbins from the 1950s and 1960s which the Hamburg Ballet has been presenting as one evening since 2010. The season’s second revival, Illusionen – wie Schwanensee, continues the seasonal focus on April 8, 2018. The tale of Swan Lake has become almost a synonym for classical ballet today. In his independent version of 1976, John Neumeier combined the myth of the libretto with the historical personality of the Bavarian King Ludwig II, known as the “Fairy-Tale King”, and biographical aspects of the composer Piotr Tchaikovsky’s life.

Another season premiere at the Hamburg Ballet is Don Quixote on December 10, 2017. It is also the anniversary production commemorating the 200th birthday of the choreographer Marius Petipa in 2018. To John Neumeier, this ballet is one of the masterworks of classical choreography, and he deliberately chose Rudolf Nureyev’s version: “In my opinion, this version of the ballet has the most convincing individual figures, both in choreographic and dramaturgical terms. This also brings out the quality of the Hamburg Ballet particularly effectively,” thus the Artistic Director of the Hamburg Ballet.

The world premiere of John Neumeier’s Beethoven Project also opens the 44th Hamburg Ballet Days, which conclude on July 8, 2018 with the Nijinsky Gala XLIV and its international cast. During the two-week festival, John Neumeier’s creations of recent years can be viewed in short succession, including Anna Karenina, Turangalîla, Duse and Das Lied von der Erde. In addition, July 3 and 4, 2018 will see two performances by the National Ballet of Canada, this year’s guest company at the festival.

Four times per season, the popular Ballet Workshops continue. In these matinee performances, John Neumeier explains the dance-historical background of his ballets and gives insights into his creative process. The Ballet School of the Hamburg Ballet presents the breadth of its artistic training programmes under the title Erste Schritte (First Steps) on April 26 and June 25, 2018. From February 26 to 28 and March 2 to 4, 2018, the theatre classes of the Ballet School give guest performances at the Ernst Deutsch Theater, showing student choreographies as final practical exams at the Werkstatt der Kreativität IX (Workshop of Creativity IX). On March 10 and 11, the Hamburg Ballet’s Young Choreographers will present their own works at the opera stabile.

The 2017/2018 season sees the Hamburg Ballet on tour in Germany and abroad – showing a total of five different ballets, one ballet workshop and a gala programme. In October 2017 the company travels to its annual autumn residency at the Baden-Baden Festspielhaus, giving a guest performance of St. Matthew’s Passion that same month in Moscow, in honour of the 500-year anniversary of the Reformation. In February 2018 the Hamburg Ballet undertakes an extensive tour of Japan, with performances in Tokyo and Kyoto. And completing its tour season, the Hamburg Ballet appears at the Theater an der Wien in Vienna in May 2018.

    J. Öhman and S. Waltz present five premieres and four revivals
    Presentation of the 2018/2019 season

Berlin, 26 February 2018 --- On Monday morning, 11.00 am, Johannes Öhman and Sasha Waltz presented the program of the 2018/2019 season, when Johannes Öhman starts as the new Director of the Staatsballett Berlin. Sasha Waltz will follow him to work in a Co-directorship from 2019/2020 on. The classical ballet productions “La Bayadère” by Alexej Ratmansky and “La Sylphide | Napoli” by Frank Andersen as well as the double or triple bills “Celis | Eyal”, “Van Dijk | Eyal” and “Balanchine | Forsythe | Siegal” will be the premieres of the season. Further news were the intensification of cooperation with the Staatliche Ballettschule Berlin as the students will take part in three productions and will present their own performances at the Staatsoper Unter den Linden and Komische Oper Berlin. Yolanda Correa, Daniil Simkin, and Alejandro Virelles Gonzalez were presented as new principals to the company.

In the framework of the annual press conference of the Staatsballett Berlin, the upcoming Artistic Director Johannes Öhman presented the program of the 2018/2019 season together with Sasha Waltz, who will follow him to work in a Co-directorship from the 2019/2020 season onwards. Five premieres, including three creations and four repertory revivals are planned. Alexei Ratmansky, one of the leading choreographers working today and a sensitive connoisseur of the ballet tradition, will recreate “La Bayadère” in the spirit of Marius Petipa. Creations are commissioned by Anouk van Dijk, who will be staging her work in an evening at the Komische Oper Berlin, and by Richard Siegal, whose creation is a part of the evening “Balanchine | Forsythe | Siegal”. Frank Andersen is staging Auguste Bournonville’s “La Sylphide” and the third act of “Napoli”, which is famous for Bournonville’s insis¬tence on virtuosity in dance without compromising on inner expression. And two contemporary choreographers, Stijn Celis and Sharon Eyal, will each present one of their acclaimed choreographies in Berlin for the first time. Returning to the repertoire are “Swan Lake” by Patrice Bart, “The Nutcracker” by Medvedev/Burlaka and “Onegin” and “Romeo and Juliet” by John Cranko.

“We are honouring the past and we embrace the future. For both of us it is important to introduce and create new original works for the company as well as display the rich heritage of dance from its beginnings to the present day“, says Johannes Öhman about the long-term vision of the artistic curation in the Co-directorship.

In a move to foster new talent the cooperation with the Staatliche Ballettschule Berlin will be intensified, with students performing in “La Bayadère”, “La Sylphide | Napoli” and “The Nutcracker”. In addition to the traditional stage programs at the Staatsoper Unter den Linden, a second evening will be shown at the Komische Oper Berlin.

Finally, new members of the company were presented: Yolanda Correa from the Norwegian National Ballet, Daniil Simkin from the American Ballet Theatre and Alejandro Virelles Gonzalez from Bayerisches Staatsballett – all of whom are principals in their companies and will be at the Staatsballett Berlin – will be part of the ensemble from the beginning of the new season.

John Neumeier: Artistic Director and Chief Choreographer of the Hamburg Ballet until 2023

The longstanding success story of the Hamburg Ballet will be continued

The Supervisory Board of the Hamburg State Opera and the responsible committee of the Hamburg Senate have extended Prof. John Neumeier’s contract as Artistic Director and Chief Choreographer of the Hamburg Ballet, which currently expires in 2019, for four years until 2023. Since 1973, the honorary citizen of Hamburg has been Ballet Director and Chief Choreographer of the Hamburg Ballet and has since 1996 also held the position of General Manager. By extending his contract, the Hamburg Ballet continues its longstanding success story.

Under John Neumeier’s directorship, the Hamburg Ballet has become one of the most important and internationally renowned cultural institutions. Recently, John Neumeier and his company were enthusiastically received by Japanese audiences during a major tour of the country; last week, John Neumeier presented the premiere of his new ballet “Anna Karenina” on the Historic Stage of the Bolshoi Theatre Moscow, as a coproduction whose world premiere had been celebrated at the Hamburg State Opera in July 2017. The creative energy of John Neumeier and his company will continue to evolve within Hamburg and during its international tours as cultural ambassador of the Hanseatic city. In order to enhance the profile of the Hamburg Ballet, the number of dancers will be increased by three additional posts from the 2018/19 season onwards. Furthermore, the city will continue to establish a reliable institutional basis for the National Youth Ballet of Germany and ensure the long-term survival of the John Neumeier Foundation which houses one of the largest private dance collections in the world.

Dr. Carsten Brosda, Minister of Culture and Media: „John Neumeier and his company fascinate their worldwide audiences with unabated energy and creativity. They are unique ambassadors of the Cultural City of Hamburg. The sustained success of the Hamburg Ballet under the directorship of John Neumeier in Hamburg and its international reputation are truly impressive, and both inspire us to continue the success story of the Hamburg Ballet. As a result, John Neumeier will complete half a century as Artistic Director of the Hamburg Ballet – this is an outstanding achievement which marks an artistically unique era.”

Prof. John Neumeier, Artistic Director and Chief Choreographer, Hamburg Ballet: „Although I have been Ballet Director of the Hamburg Ballet for 45 years, I still consider this position an extraordinarily fascinating mission in life: for me as an artist and choreographer, as General Manager of the Hamburg Ballet and, not least, as Honorary Citizen of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg. My mental and physical health allows me to develop far-reaching plans for the future. With my decision to prolong the period of my Artistic Directorship at the Hamburg Ballet for four years, I also meet various expectations, e. g. from our renowned tour partners in Tokyo, Moscow and Vienna. There is no doubt that the Hamburg Ballet’s main focus is to enrich the cultural life of its artistic home city. However, under my direction it has also developed into a significant part of the international dance scene. To continue this honorary mission, together with Lloyd Riggins as Deputy Artistic Director, until 2023, holds special significance for me.”

John Neumeier was appointed Artistic Director of the Hamburg Ballet in 1973 and is at present the longest-serving living ballet director in the world. He has been awarded numerous honours and awards, including being made an honorary citizen of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg in 2007. The repertoire of the Hamburg Ballet includes all 158 of John Neumeier’s choreographies, and his company has given over 1.000 performances during 331 tours in 30 countries on five continents.

The 2018/2019 Season of the Hamburg Ballet John Neumeier – An Overview

The 2018/2019 season of the Hamburg Ballet has “Threads of my Life” as its motto. After 45 years at the helm of the Hamburg Ballet, John Neumeier thus summarizes a programme he has selected from a highly personal perspective. After the worldwide success of A Streetcar Named Desire, John Neumeier continues his exploration of the works of the American playwright Tennessee Williams, presenting the world premiere of The Glass Menagerie. 75 years after Williams landed his first great stage hit with this work, John Neumeier’s ballet adaptation of the same name opens the 45th Hamburg Ballet Days on June 16, 2019.

John Neumeier dedicates the winter premiere of the Hamburg Ballet, Brahms/Balanchine (December 9, 2018), to the legendary New York City Ballet director George Balanchine: “He has been, in a sense, a role model for me – not only because his many years of loyalty to the New York City Ballet are similar to my dedication to Hamburg – but because of his constant ability to renew dance. Firmly rooted in tradition, Balanchine’s creativity gave classical ballet contemporary form.” The production combines the opulent Brahms-Schoenberg Quartet with the comparatively intimate ballet Liebeslieder Walzer – to John Neumeier, a rarely-performed “jewel” among Balanchine’s choreographies.

The exceptional highlight of the season is the evening of John Neumeier’s 80th birthday, when the choreographer himself moderates the Benefit Gala The World of John Neumeier (February 24, 2019). His vision is an independent ballet institution with the high-carat collection of his foundation as its core assets. This goal in mind, John Neumeier dedicates the proceeds of the Benefit Gala to the John Neumeier Foundation.

On the season’s opening weekend, the Hamburg Ballet revives Bernstein Dances (September 9, 2018), thereby paying homage to John Neumeier’s personal friend Leonard Bernstein during Bernstein’s centennial. The Hamburg Ballet also marks the centennial of Jerome Robbins by performing Chopin Dances. The classical ballets The Nutcracker and Illusions – like Swan Lake (both by John Neumeier) and Don Quixote (by Rudolf Nureyev) also refer to an anniversary commemorated throughout the world: the 200th birthday of the groundbreaking ballet master and choreographer Marius Petipa.

The 2018/2019 season programme illustrates the diversity of ballet genres which exemplify John Neumeier’s work as an artist and choreographer. In the field of symphonic ballet, these include not only the Beethoven Project (world premiere on June 24, 2018), but also the revival of All Our Yesterdays: Des Knaben Wunderhorn / Fifth Symphony of Gustav Mahler (February 17, 2019). Other works that must be mentioned are the literary ballets Anna Karenina and Lady of the Camellias, the sacred-music ballet Christmas Oratorio I-VI and John Neumeier’s genre-bending “total work of art”, Orphée et Eurydice, a co-production with the Lyric Opera Chicago and the Los Angeles Opera, which has its European premiere on February 3, 2019. Orphée et Eurydice is a production of the Hamburg State Opera including the Hamburg Ballet. Just as the production Brahms/Balanchine, this premiere is supported by the Foundation for the Support of the Hamburg State Opera.

The 45th Hamburg Ballet Days (June 16 to 30, 2019) will be bookended by the world premiere of The Glass Menagerie by John Neumeier and the Nijinsky Gala XLV, the festive closing of the season. The festival presents the most interesting ballet productions of the season, including the opera Orphée et Eurydice. Furthermore, the renowned Dutch company Het Nationale Ballet presents works by the celebrated choreographer Hans van Manen on June 25 and 26, 2019. Featured works include Symphonies of the Netherlands and 5 Tangos. This is the third invitation John Neumeier has issued to this impressive guest company, following its appearances in the Hanseatic City in 1977 and 1990.

Four times per season, the Hamburg Ballet hosts its popular Ballet Workshops. In these matinee performances, John Neumeier explains the historical background of his ballets, offering insights into his creative process. The Benefit Workshop on December 16, 2018 merits special mention, as its proceeds go to the dance foundation Stiftung Tanz.

Behind this decision stands John Neumeier’s determination to support dancers’ careers, also beyond their successful phases. As the chairman of its supervisory board ever since the founding of the Stiftung Tanz, he has tried to offer dancers perspectives for their professional future after their active career. The positions for aspirants of the Hamburg Ballet also go back to his initiative: after completing their training, they are given the possibility to be introduced to a professional dancer’s work at the Hamburg Ballet. During the 2018/2019 season, all six aspirant positions are financed in full by the Friends of the Hamburg Ballet Center e.V.

From February 25 to 27 and March 1 to 3, 2019, the School of the Hamburg Ballet celebrates the ten-year anniversary of the annual Workshop of Creativity. Since 2010, the theatre classes perform at the Ernst Deutsch Theater, showing their own choreographies as danced final theses. Just like the Workshop of Creativity, the creative format Young Choreographers enjoys the particular esteem of John Neumeier, the Director of the School of the Hamburg Ballet: together with their colleagues, dancers of the Hamburg Ballet develop their own choreographies in their free time, presenting them in a professional framework. After four seasons at the opera stabile, the Young Choreographers will now appear on a new stage. The place and dates for the new performance venue will be announced separately.

The 2018/2019 season takes the Hamburg Ballet on tour in Germany and abroad – the company will show four different ballets, a ballet workshop and a gala programme outside Hamburg. In October 2018 the company travels to the Festspielhaus Baden-Baden for its annual autumn residence, where it performs Bernstein Dances, a Ballet Workshop and Anna Karenina. In 2019 the Hamburg Ballet undertakes an extensive tour of Asia, with Hong Kong as the most important stop (The Nutcracker, The World of John Neumeier, Beethoven Project).

Guest Appearances of the Hamburg Ballet John Neumeier in 2018/2019 – An Overview

Ever since John Neumeier arrived in the Hanseatic City in 1973 as its ballet director, international guest performances have been part of the Hamburg Ballet’s self-concept. With his artistic engagement, Hamburg’s Artistic Director of the Ballet and honorary citizen has caused many a stir, year after year – making him one of the most distinguished ambassadors for the high-carat cultural life of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg. Over the past 45 years, the Hamburg Ballet has given more than 1,000 guest performances in 119 different cities in 30 countries. Hamburg has every reason to be proud of this sustained presence in the world’s great cultural centres.

Only last year, the German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier attended the highly symbolic Russian premiere of John Neumeier’s Saint Matthew Passion in Moscow, on the occasion of the 500-year anniversary of the Reformation. During the subsequent group photograph on stage, the President addressed the dancers, visibly moved: “Thank you very much – you are wonderful ambassadors for Germany!”

This is the standard which John Neumeier and the Hamburg Ballet apply to all their guest appearances, including those of the 2018/2019 season. The Hamburg Ballet shows four ballet productions, one ballet workshop and a gala programme in Baden-Baden and on an extensive tour of Asia, with Hong Kong as the main stop.

「Stijn Celis / Sharon Eyal」*新作
「Anouk Van Dijk / Sharon Eyal」*
