Respectueusement
Aurelie Dupont |

At the press conference last Friday, Manuel Legris introduced the program which includes his symbolic or important pieces to show his life of a dancer, creations or premieres in Japan to do his duty as an artistic director, and the pieces choreographed by himself. Also I would like to note that during introducing his dancers of Vienna Legris specially mentioned Jakob Feyferlik as he is a very promising young dancer and a future étoile of Vienna.

Shinshokan’s Dance Magazine did a special coverage of the Japan tour of l'Opéra de Paris, including lots of photos and interviews with Étoiles such as Aurélie Dupont, a long and very interesting interview, Hugo Marchand, of course in front, Mathias Heymann, Dorothée Gilbert, Ludmila Pagliero, Josua Hoffalt, Amandine Albisson, Germain Louvet, Léonore Baulac, and also Arthus Raveau. There are some new information about coming performance/project; Dorothée Gilbert will dance with Hugo Marchand in Onegin next season. She also announced that she will be in a short film directed by her husband and a photographer James Bort. This will be his debut as a film director. The story is about a day of a Première Danseuse (played by Dorothée Gilbert) at l'Opéra de Paris and Catherine Deneuve will appear as Directrice de la Danse. Ludmila Pagliero will dance Bournonville's La Sylphide coming July in Argentina and Chile. (No detail) Arthus Raveau will guest with the Kyoto Ballet along with Aubane Philbert to dance Grand Pas Classique d'Auber and Suite de danses in Kyoto 30 July .
It's quite nice that those photos remind me of the tour last March. The tour was definitely a huge success (though unfortunately might not at the box office, I think), not only because of the nomination of Hugo Marchand but also the whole dancers who were very much engaged and committed. The opening night of La Sylphide was indeed a miraculous performance with ethereal (and so cute) Myriam Ould-Braham, incredible Mathias Heymann and exquisite (and so cute) Léonore Baulac. François Alu was superb in Ecossaise pas de deux. One of the best performances for me it was. At the second night, Hugo Marchand really did great. He was perfect in dancing and acting and partnering. Couldn't believe this was his role debut after only a month of preparing. He was already Étoile before the nomination. Also there was a good chemistry between Hugo Marchand and Amandine Albisson. They brought a well-established performance. I really liked Albisson's sylphide for her airy coquetry and perfect embodiment of French style. Josua Hoffalt performed arrogant and not-a-good-person James. Distinct from the other two but I thought it very interesting and effective. I liked it very much anyway. Soloists and the Corp de ballet did a good job, too, surely deserving a warm applause.
As for the Grand Gala, against my expectation, Daphnis et Chloé was so good and pretty much appreciated by Japanese audiences. Strongly led by Maxime Pascal, Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra gave us a fantastic performance of Ravel’s music. And the casting was incredible. Aurélie Dupont and Germain Louvet were celestial and sparkling as the leading couple. Germain Louvet looked so happy and honored and thrilled to dance along with beautiful Aurélie Dupont. Léonore Baulac showed her acting talent in Lycéion, again after Effie. François Alu as Bryaxis never had an idea of holding back before his boss (Aurélie Dupont), as well as Marc Moreau as Dorcon. Eleonore Gérineau stood out and the corp de ballet was so powerful through the run. The second cast was not that much successful, though. But I took my hats off to Marc Moreau who did totally opposite roles, two Daphnis and two Dorcon, in 5 performances, and also to Mathieu Contat who stepped in Bryaxis to replace Arthus Raveau. It looked obvious that he was holding back before Aurélie Dupont, plus there was an accident that he hit his head on one of the enormous stage set descending from above during the rough pdd with Dupont at his first performance in matinée 11 March. Then Aurélie Dupont gave him a second chance (or she bided him to do it again?), so he replaced Alu in soirée on the same day and he did a good job! I believe he succeeded to recover his confidence.
It was a slow start for Thème et variations even with Myriam Ould-Braham and Mathias Heymann for the first night. It was the third show, Valentine Colasante and François Alu took the floor, showed an energetic Thème et variations and changed the atomosphere. Not only I but also the audiences appreciated it a lot. Dorothée Gilbert and Josua Haffalt were reigning as Étoiles at the fourth show, and Myriam Ould-Braham and Mathias Heymann's third performance at the fifth and the last show was splendid. The corp de ballet was beautiful and so much committed through all the performances.
I had been so much looking forward to Other Dances but, regret to say, none of the three couples exceeded my expectations. The tempo was too slow... I liked Gilbert + Hoffalt the best, though.
