Pacific Northwest Ballet has had a number of European dancers during the past 30 years or so, some of them from France. Christophe Maraval is the latest. The company's performance Saturday night will be dedicated to him as he retires from the ensemble but not dancing.
He will not be unemployed long. He leaves practically within hours after his last performance for Montreal where he is joining the faculty of Ballet Divertimento de Montreal, an educational institution that offers a wide range of ballet programs including choreographic workshops.
Maraval has been a member of PNB since 1999, a soloist then and promoted to principal the following year. He brought his finely toned sense of classicism, carefully taught in France, to everything he danced and for this performance will dance a leading role in Balanchine's "Symphony in Three Movements," as well as a piece d'occasion, choreographed by company artistic director Peter Boal, for him and Louise Nadeau. |
