Les lauréats:
Andreï Merkuriev
Natalia Sologub

Those of us who were not born yesterday take a rather jaundiced view of awards such as the Golden Mask
Behind the Mask, as it were, a question does hover in the air, as to why Forsythe, Dawson and Balanchine are being forcefed to the Russians by the Powers that Be at Washington and London
the press and media campaign in the so-called Anglo-Saxon world around this, has to be seen to be believed
but those who might care to think it all spontaneous, or an Act of God, well, Dream On !

The St Petersburg Times
The Moscow Times
Citation: |
Once the Mariinsky showed its "An Offering to Balanchine" and "Forsythe at the Mariinsky" late last week, the Golden Mask ballet competition became pretty much a "no contest," except for choosing a winner between the two. The Bolshoi's stunning modern version of Sergei Prokofiev's "Romeo and Juliet" might still have been in the running, although when considered in terms of pure and superbly executed dance, it seemed almost bound to lose out.
Both Mariinsky evenings brought to mind superlatives: "An Offering to Balanchine" as the most beautiful evening of ballet and "Forsythe at the Mariinsky" as the most thrilling display of dance likely to be found in Russia today. In the end, it was choreographer William Forsythe's work that led to all three prizes, for best production, best female dancer (Natalya Sologub) and best male dancer (Andrei Merkuryev).
Beyond noting its intricacy, speed and uncanny correspondence to the music behind it, Forsythe's choreography virtually defies description, as does the Mariinsky company's amazing ability to dance steps far removed from their normal classical routine. It all needs to be seen, and fortunately Moscow audiences have a chance for another look when the Mariinsky puts in a guest appearance at the Bolshoi late next month.
