Solo Echo (Crystal Pite)

Safe as Houses

    SA./SO., 9./10. APRIL 2016, 19/18 UHR

    Wenn die Seele tanzt

Das Nederlands Dans Theater macht im April 2016 Station im Festspielhaus Baden-Baden. Dreiteiliger Abend voller Poesie.

    GALA 2016

    * wednesday 7 September: Festive opening of the 2016-2017 ballet season
    * Igone de Jongh – Dutch National Ballet ballerina for 20 years
    * Toer van Schayk – 80th birthday
    * ballet gala with two world premieres, one Dutch premiere and highlights of the repertoire
    * world premieres by Toer van Schayk and Remi Wörtmeyer
    * Dutch premiere by Twyla Tharp
    * all the stars of Dutch National Ballet perform on stage
    * presentation of the Alexandra Radius Prize 2016

In September, Dutch National Ballet is opening the new ballet season in spectacular style with a festive Gala – a unique evening of new ballets and highlights from the company’s varied repertoire. The exclusive Gala performance is a hugely popular event, attended by ballet-lovers and celebrities.

This year, there is a special focus on Igone de Jongh, who is celebrating her twentieth anniversary with Dutch National Ballet in September, and on choreographer, painter, sculptor, and set and costume designer Toer van Schayk, who is celebrating his 80th birthday in the same month.
Besides two world premieres, by Toer van Schayk and Remi Wörtmeyer, the programme will include a Dutch premiere by Twyla Tharp, some well-known pas de deux, performances by all the company’s stars, guest performances, the Junior Company, the presentation of the Alexandra Radius Prize 2016 and over 200 dancers in the spectacular Grand Defilé.
The Gala will take place on Wednesday 7 September 2016, in Dutch National Opera & Ballet, in Amsterdam. The performance will be followed by a party in the foyer, attended by the dancers and choreographers.

    Igone de Jongh’s 20th anniversary

Igone is by far the best-known ballerina of her generation in the Netherlands. She started with the company as an aspirant in 1996, rising through all the ranks in seven years to become a principal at the young age of 24, in 2003. Igone trained at the National Ballet Academy, in Amsterdam, and at The Royal Ballet School, in London. Her deputy director in London at the time called her an ‘enigma’: ‘A dancer with such a special quality that you just have to watch her’.

During her training, she was already presented with the Arnold Haskell Award. In 2002, she received the Incentive Award from Stichting Dansersfonds ’79, and a year later the Alexandra Radius Prize (2003). Igone has danced practically all the main roles in the classical repertoire, and she is the muse of choreographer Hans van Manen. In 2015, she was a jury member in the popular Dutch television programme Dance Dance Dance, and she has recently finished recording the second series.
In 2015, the magazine Dance Europe listed Igone in the category ‘Dancer of the Year’ for her roles in John Neumeier’s La Dame aux Camelias and Hans van Manen’s Fantasia.

    Toer van Schayk is 80

Toer van Schayk (Amsterdam, 1936) is also known as ‘the last Renaissance artist’. He is a multi-talented artist; he choreographs, paints, sculpts and designs scenery and costumes. In everything he does, he shows a craftsmanship, precision and eye for detail that seems almost to belong to another era. He has worked with Dutch National Ballet for over fifty years. Van Schayk began his dancing career with the Nederlands Ballet, stopped dancing to train as a sculptor, but returned to dance on stage again in 1965. He stood out for his expressive and moving interpretations and, from 1971, for the ballets he created, in which you can often discern the visual artist because of their plastic quality. He has created around forty ballets in total, including the full-length The Nutcracker and the Mouse King (in collaboration with Wayne Eagling). This ballet is still regularly presented by Dutch National Ballet, as are his designs for Swan Lake, Romeo and Juliet and Giselle.

    Alexandra Radius Prize 2016
The presentation of the 28th Alexandra Radius Prize will take place at the gala. Since 1988, this prize has been awarded every year to a dancer from Dutch National Ballet who stood out in particular in the previous season. The prize was founded by Alexandra Radius, who became world famous along with her husband and dance partner Han Ebbelaar. Last year, the prize was awarded to principal dancer Maia Makhateli.

Very Happy

      DUTCH NATIONAL BALLET
PRESENTS FIRST VIRTUAL REALITY BALLET IN THE WORLD

In collaboration with &samhoud media and Samsung, Dutch National Ballet is the first company in the world to launch a ballet especially created for Virtual Reality: Night Fall. The Virtual Reality ballet will be presented in The VR Cinema in Amsterdam https://thevrcinema.com/nl and online on operaballet.nl/vr. The world premiere of the very first Virtual Reality ballet took place last weekend in Amsterdam at the UITmarkt, the opening of the cultural season. There was free admission to the performance during the whole UITmarkt weekend in the Dutch National Opera & Ballet Virtual Reality Theatre on Museumplein, in Amsterdam.

In Night Fall, the viewer feels like part of the corps de ballet, entering a world where the boundary between dream and reality seems to vanish. The choreography is inspired by the world-famous ‘white acts’ from Romantic ballets like Swan Lake, La Bayadère and Les Sylphides. The ballet was choreographed by Peter Leung, a former dancer with Dutch National Ballet, to music composed by Robin Rimbaud (Scanner). It was directed by Jip Samhoud and Marijn Korver from &samhoud media. Night Fall is a co-production by Dutch National Ballet, &samhoud media and Chester Music. The Samsung Galaxy S7 and Gear VR provide the technology that makes it possible to produce the first ballet in Virtual Reality.

Choreographer Peter Leung: ‘It was quite a challenge to coordinate all the different aspects and to see if it would work, as a Virtual Reality ballet has never been created before. The filming was a totally new experience for me as well. We had to hide away and not get in the camera’s sightline, as it films everything in 360 degrees. That meant that I couldn’t see how a take had gone. The result, however, is poetic and magical’.
To read the full interview with Peter Leung, click here

Director Jip Samhoud is proud of the collaboration. ‘It’s very special to combine this new technology with such a classical art form. The result is magical, as the viewer is literally in among the dancers, in the middle of the stage. You get a sense that the dancers are creating a performance especially for you. It’s a really extraordinary experience’.

‘Virtual Reality has the unique quality of changing experiences. Since the introduction of the Gear VR, new experiences have become accessible to the general public’, says Gerben van Walt Meijer, Marketing Manager Mobile of Samsung Nederland. ‘We are really proud to have been able to create this first-ever VR ballet experience together with Dutch National Ballet’.

Anyone with a smartphone can watch the film. To optimise the experience, it is best to use a Samsung Gear VR or a smartphone in combination with a Cardboard. And the experience is completed by using headphones.

      Dutch press on Night Fall:
“A key moment in dance history. It feels as if the ballet is laid at your feet like a gift. As a viewer, you are right at the centre. They circle around you, look into your eyes, show you the violin or open the palm of their hand in front of your face. Forget the distance from the stage and forget opera glasses – you’re looking the dancers and musicians in the eye. Just one more step and you could touch the fabric of their tutus. At least, that’s how it feels. Night Fall is one of a series of key moments in dance history, about the relationship between dance and screen”. (de Volkskrant, Annette Embrechts, 30 August 2016)

      Credits for Night Fall:
      Choreography & concept: Peter Leung
      Director: Jip Samhoud
      Creative director: Marijn Korver
      Music: Robin Rimbaud - Scanner
      Violinist: Pieter van Loenen
Dancers: Anna Tsygankova and Artur Shesterikov
Nancy Burer, Lisanne Kottenhagen, Emilie Tassinari, Belle Beasley, Melissa Chapski, Priscylla Gallo, Clara Superfine and Hannah Williams

Night Fall is a co-production by Dutch National Ballet, &samhoud media and Chester Music, powered by Samsung.

      Dutch National Ballet
With over eighty dancers, Dutch National Ballet is the largest dance company in the Netherlands.
