Sir Paul McCartney ballet premieres in New York (The Telegraph)

Citation:
Sir Paul McCartney will achieve a new first tonight as he premieres his first-ever ballet score in New York. The former Beatles star has worked on a number of classical works, including his Liverpool Oratorio, but tonight's performance marks the first time he has written an original orchestral score for dance. Sir Paul is expected to be accompanied by fiancee Nancy Shevell - whom he is to soon marry - when he attends the show at Manhattan's Lincoln Centre. The work, named Ocean's Kingdom, will be given its first performance by the New York City Ballet at the company's autumn gala. It is made up of four movements, is conducted by John Wilson and performed by the London Classical Orchestra...

Paul McCartney nervous before his world ballet debut in NYC (The New York Post)

Citation:
Sir Paul McCartney has confessed he is "quietly confident and nervous" ahead of Thursday's world premiere of his first ever ballet in New York. The 69-year-old pop icon spoke to The (London) Times before the gala performance of "Ocean's Kingdom" at New York City's Ballet on Thursday night, for which he has composed the score. Costumes for the much-anticipated production have been designed by his daughter, Stella. "We've done the best we can do, so we can do no more," the former Beatle said. "We've all put a lot of work into it. I'll be a bit nervous but I think that's a good thing."...

Stella McCartney designs costumes for Beatle father's ballet score debut (and there's not a tutu in sight), par Daisy Dumas (The Daily Mail)

Citation:
Stella McCartney's designs for her father's ballet production will be revealed at tomorrow night's world premier of Ocean's Kingdom. The high-powered collaboration of music, dance and fashion sees the designer join forces with her father Paul McCartney, 69, for the new ballet production that is part of New York City Ballet's Fall Gala. With final adjustments being made to outfits, headdresses and looks, the London-based designer, who celebrated her 40th birthday last weekend, said she was working until the eleventh hour on the dance clothes...

Jewels, Royal Ballet, Covent Garden, review, par Mark Monahan (The Telegraph)

Citation:
Jewels, the 1967 three-parter with which the Royal Ballet this week launched the final year of Monica Mason’s directorship, is often billed as both Balanchine’s response at the time to the sparkling displays in Van Cleef & Arpels, and as the first ever full-length plotless ballet. The latter boast is just about fair, the former debatable. Way back in 1947, the Georgian-born, New York-based choreographer was already associating the movements of his Symphony in C with precious stones, and the jeweller’s association may well have been largely a publicity stunt of Balanchine’s (beautifully choreographed, of course). Besides, the piece is above all a homage to three formative eras of dance: the pastoral classicism of 1840s France (Emeralds, to Fauré); the Broadway-style pizzazz of Balanchine’s adoptive home (the Stravinsky-inspired Rubies); and the high-baroque regality of late-19th-century St Petersburg (Diamonds, to Tchaikovsky)...

Darcey Bussell reveals 'trick' dance photography, par Anita Singh (The Telegraph)

Citation:
Images of the ballerina leaping through the air were sometimes aided by a carefully concealed trampoline. “We used to do lots of tricks to get a picture in the air so that I could do so many different jumps,” Bussell confided at the launch of the the Royal Academy’s new Degas and the Ballet exhibition. “We used to get a trampoline and the photographers would be so chuffed. It was still quite dangerous because you can sprain your ankle, but it was very good because I wasn’t exhausted the next day...

Cold War tensions thaw as U.S. dancer is first to be accepted at Moscow's prestigious Bolshoi Ballet, par Anita Singh (The Daily Mail)

Citation:
A young American ballet star has become the first foreign dancer to become a 'premier' with the famed Bolshoi Ballet in Moscow. David Hallberg, who will also remain a principal with the New York-based American Ballet Theatre, received the distinction earlier this year. Uuntil now, foreign dancers were only invited for guest stints and traditionally it has been stars from Moscow who move to the U.S. So harsh was the political climate, even those dancers that fled the Soviet Union were said to have faced death warrants ordered by the KGB...

National Ballet [of Canada] coming, par Amy Smart (The Times Colonist - Vancouver)

Citation:
Before Air Canada and its union reached a tentative deal averting a strike, Karen Kain was plotting ways to move more than 50 dancers around the country by bus. With the crisis averted, the National Ballet of Canada is still set to perform in Victoria Sept. 27 and 28 as part of its 60th anniversary tour, with a collection of four pieces by contemporary choreographers. Lucky for audiences as well as performers. "I think it would be very hard for the dancers to have to sit in the bus for 15 hours to get from Edmonton to Vancouver," said Kain, artistic director of the National Ballet...
