Fête de l'Humanité 2011: Aragon, les Diables verts, Pietragalla et compagnie, par Dominique Widemann (L'Humanité)

Citation:

Scottish Ballet shows Eastern promise at Edinburgh Festival, par Judith Mackrell (The Guardian)

Citation:
It's an obvious truth that abstract dance is never really abstract. When men and women are dancing on stage, there is always human behaviour involved. The way they listen to the music and react to the space around them, the collective affect the dancers create – all of these are fundamental to the impact of a piece. So it matters, in Jorma Elo's new work for Scottish Ballet, that we have no idea who the dancers are. Kings 2 Ends is a knowingly postmodern ballet, advertising its smartness through incongruities of subtext and style. Musically, it couples Steve Reich's dense, burnished Double Sextet with Mozart's sweet and airy First Violin Concerto. Choreographically, it juxtaposes limber dancing with moments of distorting subversion, as dancers strut, hobble, jerk around, and pull quizzical faces at the audience. It launches flights of arrowy, neoclassical dance that turn suddenly floppy and random...

Scottish Ballet, Edinburgh Playhouse, par Zoë Anderson (The Independent)

Citation:
Scottish Ballet's appearances at the Edinburgh International Festival are big occasions: they are both at home and on an international stage. This year, they unveiled a world premiere and their first performances of one of Kenneth MacMillan's best-loved works. The dancers rose triumphantly to these challenges. The new Kings 2 Ends is Jorma Elo's first work for a British company. Born in Finland, Elo danced with Netherlands Dans Theater before building a career as a choreographer. Kings 2 Ends has hints of Jiri Kylian and William Forsythe. It opens with driving moves to Steve Reich's Double Sextet, then switches to jokier dances to Mozart's First Violin Concerto. Eve Mutso, in black leotard and tiara, moves sternly in silence, then swoops into the music. Elo responds to Reich, but he struggles to fill Mozart's phrases. The dancers bob their heads like chickens, or manipulate each other like puppets. Still, Elo shows them off as sleek, speedy performers...

Talented Kendal dancer heads for classes with the Royal Ballet, par Rachel Ryan (The Westmorland Gazette)

Citation:
A budding young ballerina from New Hutton has danced her way onto a top classical training course. Leah, who dances at Rigney Bank Ballet School in Milnthorpe, will continue her usual classes but will travel to Manchester once each week, where she will join other talented youngsters in special classes designed to enhance her classical training...

Artists said no to Degas's Little Dancer, par Martin Bailey (The Art Newspaper)

Citation:
One of the stars of the Royal Academy of Arts’s forthcoming Degas show (“Degas at the Ballet”, 17 September-11 December) will be the bronze Little Dancer Aged Fourteen. Lent by the Tate, it has been in the museum's collection since 1952. Buying the Little Dancer was opposed, however, by three of the London museum's trustees. Leading British artists Henry Moore, Graham Sutherland and John Piper were concerned that the museum was getting value for its money. The Tate bought the Little Dancer (1881, cast 1922) for £9,000 from London’s Marlborough Fine Art. The National Art Collections Fund (now Art Fund) contributed £6,000. A rival dealer, New York-based Curt Valentin, told Moore that the £9,000 price demanded by Marlborough was too high. Valentin was then Moore’s own dealer...

Achtgeben!
