Citation:
Cecil B DeMille would have adored La Bayadère. His famous Hollywood spectaculars could have been inspired by this grand old ballet, which was one of Marius Petipa’s early hits. Even this truncated version of the 1877 original, which lops off the final act in which temples crumble, baddies are routed and the loving hero and heroine are reunited in paradise, reveals this as a ballet with more special effects than almost any other. The best of them emerge in the second act, when – for complicated reasons – the warrior Solor is about to marry the Rajah’s evil daughter Gamzatti instead of the temple dancer Nikiya, to whom he has promised eternal love. On comes the wedding procession, complete with parrots, warriors, Indian drummers, an elephant and a stuffed tiger. And on come the dancers, endless lines of them, in bright costumes...

Mariinsky Ballet, Royal Opera House: The Highlights, par Judith Flanders (The Arts Desk)

Citation:
The Mariinsky Ballet has just completed a three-week season, with terrific highs (and the odd low). This was the 50th anniversary of the Mariinsky (then Kirov)’s first London visit, in 1961, and it is worth highlighting the role impresarios Victor and Lilian Hochhauser have played in the cultural life of London. They brought the Mariinsky to London in 1961, and, half a century later, they have once more given Londoners a summer of artistic richness, with ten ballets, six choreographers and numerous casts. We owe a great deal to this extraordinary couple...

National Ballet of China – review, par Judith Mackrell (The Guardian)

Citation:
The world's ballet companies may seem increasingly interchangeable in repertory and style, but National Ballet of China's Peony Pavilion stands out as a captivating original. Even though Fei Bo's choreography is grounded in western dance and Guo Wenjing's eclectic score quotes large chunks of Debussy and Ravel, this ballet could still have come from nowhere but Beijing...

The Peony Pavilion, Festival Theatre, Edinburgh, par Zoë Anderson (The Independent)

Citation:
In The Peony Pavilion, the National Ballet of China layers western ballet and traditional Chinese arts. The clash of styles can be startling. Kunqu opera singing overlaps with a lush burst of Debussy. A heroine in pointe shoes pleads with a fierce god in crimson beard and silk robes. The ballet is based on a Chinese love story. Du Liniang dreams of love, then dies of a broken heart when she wakes up. Taking pity, the gods of the underworld return her to life, to be united with her dream lover...

Edinburgh Festival 2011: The Peony Pavilion National Ballet of China, Festival Theatre, review, par Mark Monahan (The Telegraph)

Citation:
The dance programme of this year’s Asian-themed Edinburgh International Festival got of to a lavish start on Saturday, with the first of three performances of The Peony Pavilion by the National Ballet of China. Adapted from the 20-hour Kun opera completed by Tang Xianzu in 1598, it is a tapestry of Western and Far Eastern dance conventions, and, in its score, of pieces by five big-league European composers. Fusion indeed. Visually, too, this musing on love, loss and sexual awakening is a blend of cultural sensibilities, with the lustrous silken costumes by Japan’s Emi Wada sitting beautifully against the spare, architectural geometries of Michael Simon’s sets and Simon’s and Han Jiang’s lighting. These well suit this tale of a wealthy woman (Du Liniang) who dreams of a perfect lover (Liu Mengmei), dies broken-hearted, but is ultimately allowed by an infernal court to return to the land of the living to marry her love. (Shades there initially of its almost exact contemporary, Romeo and Juliet.)...

The Peony Pavilion, par Thom Dibdin (The Stage)

Citation:
Ravishing innocence seeps from the being of the National Ballet of China’s Peony Pavilion, the story of young Du Liniang who falls in love with the handsome Liu Mengmei in a dream and, on waking, is prepared to return to her dream - and death - to find her love. Opening the stage right up to both accommodate the 46-strong company and to create a feeling minimal space, designer Michael Simon uses bold splashes of imperial colours between swathes of black and white. The corps de ballet is in a different monochrome for each of the six scenes, moving like insects beneath and around gigantic peony flowers...

Swan Lake: Orchestra of the Mariinsky Theatre/Gergiev - review, par Nick Kimberley (The Evening Standard)

Citation:
When the Orchestra of St Petersburg's Mariinsky Theatre brought Tchaikovsky's Swan Lake to the Royal Opera House last month, most reviewers didn't even mention the composer's name, let alone discuss the interplay between bodies onstage and the music in the pit. Now the Mariinsky has brought Swan Lake to the Proms - and to compensate, this review won't mention the choreography at all, mainly because there wasn't any. Unless, that is, you count conductor Valery Gergiev's strenuous conducting style as dance. One minute he's hunched over the score, the next he's bolt upright or swivelling his body through 180 degrees, fingers fluttering all the while. And who needs dancers when you have a large orchestra to watch?...

Young ballerina delights at mentoring role, par Whangarei Leader (Auckland Now - Nouvelle Zélande)

Citation:
Talented young ballerina Inge Carolus has caught the eye of the Royal New Zealand Ballet. The 14-year-old Pompallier Catholic College pupil has been selected as a mentor student – a rare honour. Just 11 teenagers nationwide have been chosen for the programme this year and paired with a dancer in the national company. Hopeful students had to provide a DVD, write a letter applying for the position and provide a letter from their ballet teacher. Royal NZ Ballet education manager Caroline Denniss says Inge was chosen because of her outstanding talent and passion...

Choreographer Twyla Tharp invites audiences to Come Fly Away, par Melissa Leong (The National Post - Canada)

Citation:
A good phrase is a good phrase, legendary choreographer Twyla Tharp says. “It’s like a good melody. It’s like a composer at a piano bench — he remembers his melodies,” the 70-year-old says in a recent telephone interview from Atlanta. “I’ll remember a very good phrase that never made it anywhere and I rephrase it.” Her phrases — or series of dance movements — have formed more than 135 works, including Broadway shows, movies and original dances, many for the world’s most eminent ballet companies. Sometimes, she’ll remember a good work and she’ll re-imagine it or expand it, which is the case with Come Fly Away, a dance revue set to the songs of Frank Sinatra. After playing on Broadway and Las Vegas, it opens Aug. 16 at the Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts in Toronto...

ImPulsTanz: Festival als Publikumsrenner, par Silvia Kargl (Der Kurier - Vienne)

Citation:
