José Martinez tire sa révérence , par Ariane Bavelier (Le Figaro)

Citation:

Citation:

Royal New Zealand Ballet, From Here to There, Barbican Theatre, par Ismene Brown (The Arts Desk)

Citation:
All ballet companies dream of finding a genuine creative talent among their ranks, and the Royal New Zealand Ballet, visiting from the farthest end of the world ballet map, have one in Andrew Simmons. The unknown name on their triple bill on this rare visit to London shows a young mind drawn naturally to grace and understated expressiveness. His creation, A Song in the Dark, is effortlessly better than the busy, inconsequential work by Jorma Elo, one of the most noised names in ballet at the moment, for reasons that escape my understanding. Both pieces are leotard ballets, Elo’s in red, Simmons’s in green, and both have a defining design element - over the dancers in the Elo is suspended a very lovely wave of steel trellis which casts trellised shadows, while beside the dancers in the Simmons is a white angled wall, which reflects their shadows to more emotive effect. Both use contemplative music, Elo plumping for the Baroque Bohemian Heinrich Biber, Simmons for Philip Glass...

Royal New Zealand Ballet / mixed bill, Barbican - review, par Sarah Frater (The Evening Standard)

Citation:
The troupe is modest, just 32 dancers, yet on a rare visit to London last night its triple bill had the elegance and panache that many larger troupes lack. The programming was especially astute, with three new works that showed off the dancers rather than reveal their weaknesses. Another smart move was the plain sets and minimal costumes, which keep costs down and the focus on the dancers, who are able and committed. They looked especially good in Andrew Simmons's A Song In the Dark. Simmons, a former company dancer, is little known outside New Zealand, yet his restrained solos and duets to Philip Glass's Tirol Concerto showed he is capable of crafting dance of ingenuity and flair...

Joffrey Ballet Labor Dispute Shines Light on Dance Life, par Meribah Knight (The New York Times)

Citation:
In early July, when Brian McSween caught wind of the stalled contract negotiations between the Joffrey Ballet’s dancers and the administration, a development that threatens the beginning of the 2011-2 season, he had one thought: Again? Mr. McSween, who danced in the company for 10 years and was a dancer’s union representative part of that time, but who left in 2009 when his contract was not renewed, recalled a similar impasse in negotiations in the summer of 2008. Just days before a scheduled free show in Millennium Park, the dancers voted unanimously to strike. Avoiding a walkout at the 11th hour, management agreed to meet some of the dancers’ requests on contentious issues like family health plans, longer rehearsal hours and wage increases, buying peace for another three years...

Ashton's Romeo and Juliet 3/5 London Coliseum, par Neil Norman (Express.co.uk)

Citation:
In this rare outing for Frederick Ashton’s version of Shakespeare’s romance the two Bolshoi guest stars dominate proceedings, even on the gala night when some old faces are in evidence. Thus Ivan Vasiliev and Natalia Osipova share the stage with Peter Schaufuss and Waynes Eagling and Sleep. Admittedly they don’t have a lot to do in the smaller roles, though Schaufuss handles Friar Laurence nicely and Sleep prances like an ageing imp teasing the Nurse...

Paul Taylor Leaps Over to the Koch, par Daniel J. Wakin (The New York Times)

Citation:
The Paul Taylor Dance Company said on Thursday that it would move three weeks of performances in the spring to the David H. Koch Theater at Lincoln Center, filling part of the gap left by the departing New York City Opera. Paul Taylor becomes the first arts organization to take advantage of the newly available and valuable stage space. But it is also a blow to City Center, where the dance company was originally scheduled to perform. It has appeared there every year since 1977 and will depart just months after the completion of a $56 million renovation at City Center...

A Book Critic at the Ballet, par Dwight Garner (The New York Times)

Citation:
A few years ago, The Guardian had the witty idea to ask its sports writers and cultural critics to swap jobs for a day. The results were delightful. An observation from the newspaper’s rugby columnist, Thomas Castalgnede, sent to review a production of “Tosca” at the Royal Opera House, has stuck with me. “What I saw in ‘Tosca’ was exactly what drew me to sport,” he wrote. “I just love to watch people give it everything — in any walk of life.”...

Miami City Ballet, Théâtre du Châtelet, Paris, par Laura Cappelle (The Financial Times)

Citation:
It was quite a bet: a little-known ballet company from Florida touring Paris for three weeks in the middle of the summer. And yet Miami City Ballet is pulling off some of the most refreshing performances seen here in a while. With 14 ballets scheduled, it may be an unprecedented undertaking for the company’s founder and director, former Balanchine star Edward Villella, but this tight-knit troupe has coped, and the audience’s reaction to the unfamiliar repertoire has been rapturous.
Under Villella’s guidance, Miami City Ballet has built a reputation for illuminating aspects of Balanchine’s style often overlooked by others. The dancers’ exuberance and faith in the steps are infectious, and theirs is an all-American musicality that sheds new light on ballets that have grown formulaic and dull on this side of the Atlantic...

Getanztes amerikanisches Kulturerbe, par N.B. (Journal Frankfurt)

Citation:
