Drastic cast change in Manuel Legris' gala in Tokyo next month. 8 in total out of 15 have been withdrawn; Aurélie Dupont, Ilze Liepa, Olga Esina, Maria Yakovleva, Kirill Kourlaev, Eno Peci, due to concern about the effect of the Fukushima nuclear power plant crisis, Roman Lazik and Vladimir Shishov, due to injury. Maria Eichwald from Stuttgart Ballet, Barbora Kohoutkova(, newly joined Vienna State Ballet?), Dmitry Gudanov from Bolchoi Ballet and Masayu Kimoto of Vienna State Ballet will replace them.
This must have been really difficult to fix to go ahead with the tour. So, I feel so much grateful for Manuel Legris and the dancers who are coming to Japan in this situation.

Celebrated U.S. ballet to tour Japan, par Wade Bunnel (The Japan Times)
Citation: |
Local audiences will have the chance to see premier ballet when the American Ballet Theatre (ABT) and its international cast of dancers return to Japan this month. Critics say the ABT has come to define modern, American-style ballet on the international stage and it has even been labeled by the U.S. Congress as a living national treasure. Few ballet companies equal ABT for its combination of size, scope and outreach. Since its inception in 1940, under the direction of Lucia Chase and Oliver Smith, the ABT has incorporated the best ballets from around the world into its repertoire, with "The Sleeping Beauty" and "Giselle" among them. While known for these classical ballet performances, the ABT has been vigorous in its efforts to produce contemporary works such as "Airs" and "Duets" with help from young choreographers and dancers from around the world. |

ABT is currently touring Japan. Half of the performances in Tokyo are already done. They did the "Opening Gala" on 21st, Special Don Quixote on 22nd, and 4 Don Qs in a row on last weekend. I attended the matinée Don Q on Saturday, in which Gillian Murphy and David Hallberg starred. I surely enjoyed the performance. Hallberg leaps and turns beautifully. Murphy was cute Kitri and her grand fouetté was AMAZING and clean at the same time. Don Q is always fun to watch. But there was something missing in that performance, I felt. Maybe there was a little lack of a load of energy, or hustle and bustle in a spanish town. Hallberg looked too elegant for Basilio to my eyes (I like Hallberg anyway) and I thought like lustier and impisher Basilio fits more Murphy's cute but not so much full of passion Kitri.(It was just that day? watch --> Japan Arts PV of ABT Japan tour I saw Murphy for the first time in full-length, by the way.) If it was Ethan Stiefel at the side of her as planned at first, it should have been different? (Stiefel withdrew from ABT's Spring Season and Japan tour so as to focus on his duties as dean of dance at the University of North Carolina School of the Arts. http://artsbeat.blogs.nytimes.com/2011/04/22/ethan-stiefel-to-withdraw-from-american-ballet-theaters-spring-season/?partner=rss&emc=rss )
Well, it seemed the matinée's became a warm-up performance for the soirée's. Yuriko Kajiya and Daniil Simkin took the main roles that night. Kajiya is the Japanese soloist of ABT and quite a technician. Simkin is 'very much' popular in Japan. I heard they brought down the house. This performance was filmed and will be broadcast through NHK BS next Saturday (July 30, 23:30-).
Also it seems the matinée on Sunday was a great performance, even though there was a last minute cast change in Basilio. Angel Corella withdrew due to sickness and Marcelo Gomes stepped in. And the soirée Don Q was the last performance for Jose Carreño with ABT. He has been loved by Japanese audience for a long time, too. So I think it might have been an emotional performance.
See some photos on Japan Arts ballet blog.
