Or, le 4ème art est tout sauf un méli-mélo, et c’est au contraire quelque chose de très souvent délectable pour les yeux. Venez observer un ballet classique à l’Opéra Garnier et votre regard changera définitivement sur ce point. Et pour équiper les petits rats de l’opéra et les danseuses étoiles, il existe quelques pointures de la chaussure de danse. Parmi elles figure la maison Merlet, créée en France en 1973 par Roger James Merlet, et qui a décidé de repenser sa stratégie de marque en faisant appel à la talentueuse agence 4uatre (à qui on doit récemment le nouveau logo de Motoblouz ou de Promotelec, par exemple)... |
Carcassonne. Bartabas donne le coup d'envoi du festival (La Dépêche du Midi)

| La cuvée 2011 du festival de Carcassonne est exceptionnelle. Parrainé par Francis Huster, il présente pendant deux mois, du 16 juin au 15 août, une affiche hors du commun, avec entre autres Iggy Pop, Moby, Ben Harper, José Carreras, Sylvie Guillem. L'Académie du spectacle équestre de Versailles dirigée par Bartabas ouvre le bal, pour trois représentations. Le festival de Carcassonne arrive au grand galop. Le rideau se lève sur l'édition 2011 le 16 juin, par la première des trois représentations de La Voie de l'écuyer pour trois soirées. Un spectacle du répertoire de l'Académie du spectacle équestre de Versailles chorégraphié par Bartabas, et qui s'enrichit chaque année. Avec le carrousel des chevaux lusitaniens, une race portugaise à la robe crème, des improvisations, des démonstrations de longues rênes, le spectacle explore l'ensemble des savoir-faire de l'Académie : du kyudo (l'art du tir à l'arc japonais) à la danse, du chant à l'escrime artistique, tout y passe... |

| For a 170-year-old ballet, “Napoli” is in admirable shape. Hot-tempered men and beautiful women with flamboyant sex appeal fill its first act, surrounded by a seaside setting so Technicolor-rich you can almost feel the heat of the sun. Or maybe that was the heat of the hoopla onstage, as the dancers of the Royal Danish Ballet whipped up an earthy Italian village scene in the production performed this weekend at the Kennedy Center Opera House. This 2009 staging of the 1842 original by Danish choreographer August Bournonville contains the light, carefully shaped dancing Bournonville works are famous for — as well as rudeness and raw comedy. Not the usual fare for romantic ballet, but that was exactly the point for Artistic Director Nikolaj Huebbe, who created this production with colleague Sorella Englund... |

| Strictly Gershwin is an in-the-round extravaganza, stuffed with guest stars and glittering with Swarovski crystals. The dancers of English National Ballet are joined by singers, ballroom and tap dancers. Roberta Guidi di Bagno dresses them finely in gowns, suits and mad little hats. Derek Deane, who staged English National Ballet's arena Swan Lake, created Strictly Gershwin in 2008. This autumn, the show will tour to conventional theatres. The dancers make the most of their material. The show mixes songs written for Broadway and Hollywood with two of Gershwin's best-known concert pieces. An American in Paris, which ends the first half, follows the Gene Kelly movie by staging it as an American's search for a girl through a whirl of stock Parisian images. The music's structure makes this a rambling, episodic ballet, but guest stars Guillaume Côté and Tamara Rojo are delightful... |

| Comprising Requiem (2001) and Beyond Bach (1995), Elegy features Baynes's appreciation of classical musical syntax and his ability to create complementary balletic architectures of poise, articulation and fluidity. Beyond Bach is pure classicism, built on the harmonic invention and clean lyricism of Bach masterworks, particularly Suite No 3 in D Major. Emotionally restrained, the choreography employs cool formalism and controlled sculptural virtuosity, sleek arabesques melting into ensemble flourishes: turning sequences, sprightly jumps and diagonal symmetries. The aesthetic extends to Andrew Carter's set, with baroque structural elements stripped and decontextualised: austere columns, a skeletal spiral staircase and golden prongs emanating from an oversized solar monstrance. In contrast, touches of baroque frippery in Anna French's costumes are a distraction, with traditional white tights and flouncy shirts for the male corps incongruous to say the least... |
