Stravinski, compositeur des chorégraphes (Sud-Ouest)

Citation:

Legging it into history…, par Adrienne Sichel (The Independent On Line - Afrique du Sud)

Citation:
The true measure of a good tertiary performing arts institution is how the former students take their acquired skills into the world. On that score, alone, the Tshwane University of Technology’s Dance and Musical Theatre department qualifies with flying colours. Scores of triple threat (actor-singer-dancers) musical theatre graduates have excelled in imported Broadway shows and specifically the homegrown African Footprint. This commercial theatre dance course, introduced in 1986, is part of a very important facet of South African contemporary dance development. In 1981 lecturer Susan Botha, a ballet teacher and dance visionary (with overseas experience), and part-time music lecturer Josef du Preez took a huge leap of faith, with the blessing of rector Josias van der Merwe, and started a one-year ballet course with six students...

At 170, a Venerable Ballet Returns to Its (Quicker) Roots, par Alastair Macaulay (The New York Times)

Citation:
Giselle,” the two-act Romantic ballet about (among much else) love beyond death, will be 170 on June 28. Because Peter Boal’s new production for Pacific Northwest Ballet is based on research by the dance historians Doug Fullington and Marian Smith, and in particular on three detailed production records from between 1842 and 1903, I went expecting to see features I had never encountered in the many productions I have watched over the last 36 years. I was not disappointed...

Houston Ballet Gets Theatrical with Taming of the Shrew, par Caroline Evans (Houston Press)

Citation:
Pretty much everyone knows at least a line or two from Shakespeare's comedy The Taming of the Shrew, if not by studying the actual play, then by virtue of pop culture: the lovelorn Lucentio's line "I pine, I burn, I perish" was uttered by the character's modern-day counterpart in '90s teen movie 10 Things I Hate About You, and Petruchio's bombastic "Kiss Me, Kate" served as the title for a musical about the antics of an on-again, off-again couple cast in the play's leading roles. With Shakespeare's words so indelible in our collective minds, how can dance communicate such decidedly dialogue-based comedy without the one-liners? "As far as theatricality in dance goes, comedy's the hardest thing to pull off," says Melody Mennite, the Houston Ballet principal who will dance the part of the tempestuous Kate in the company's production of The Taming of the Shrew, which opens Thursday. "It's all about timing, and it's all about actually not trying to be funny."...

Sizzling sensuality at American Ballet Theatre, par Lauren Gallagher (The San Francisco Examiner)

Citation:
Sex sells for a reason. Everyone has it, or wants it. It relates to the ever-unifying theme of love, and all art forms have capitalized on it. Ballet is no exception. American Ballet Theatre’s “Lady of the Camellias,” a tragic love story based on the same novel that gave birth to “La Traviata,” is full of the heavy-breathing, necking, nuzzling and bodice-ripping passion that great romance is made of, and choreographer John Neumeier doesn’t shy away from the specifics. The lovers’ choreography is rough yet elegant, swift and sweaty, never crude, yet startlingly sensual. Now in her 25th season with ABT, Julie Kent remains a technical and dramatic powerhouse of a dancer, performing the role of the doomed courtesan Marguerite Gautier with a deep, almost grave, sense of humanity...

Ballett spendet 55.000 Euro für Erdbebenopfer in Japan (Hamburger Abendblatt)

Citation:
