AS a starter, it was pretty good to have "Suite en Blanc", French style white ballet. There Eleonora left different impressions among her 3 programmes. Even the flexibility of her body, she danced with precise position and her warm elegant character put some lyrical atmosphere to this piece.

Benjamin was really distinctive as an etoile in this Adagio. Rather few dancing for male dancer, but he impressed his presence in solid lines and fine steps. I saw his steady support for Eleonora made her brilliant and stunning.

◆Ahmedo
A solo of P. de Bana with Kurd music. He showed his own way of dancing with Japanese Hakama; a bottom of Traditional cloth. Even he told most of his inspiration came from Kabuki, mainly Tamasaburo. but rather looked like Kung-fu, I felt... his sharp eye-sight on stage was really impressive as if that of Samurai.

◆La Shylphide
A beautiful pdd and a beautiful couple, Syliva and Riabko, they've just come from their home ground Hamburg Ballet, which had have its Premiere of this Lacotte's ballet.

Syliva looked very beautiful with her shylphe-like pose and in her position I saw the forum of E. Platel, who did re-mount this piece to this company. Riabko was perfect ! ; with very light, air-like steps as for James. His batterie was so brisk and steady. And they put very romantic air in this piece. Really looked PDD d'amour.

◆Slyvia
Eleonora and Manuel, looked much younger for this last scene, because without white powder on their hairs but of course they created the world of Neumeiere; a story of departing love.

Eleonora was very delicate to express her emotion to Aminta on her movement, really fine and beautiful. And as for Manuel, no word except perfect and beautiful. Soft and steady movement and well-balanced support made her beautiful and of course himself stunning. His drama longing for Syliva was so sincere that I saw a real drama in this short Pdd from Act Ⅲ.

◆Barnstine Dance
Riabko, really his step was amazing, very light and precise. Whenever I saw his Burnstain dance, I can't help but to image Balanchine not Neumeier with this up-tempo music. He looked as if being on town of America. Really he enjoyed dancing it and me as well really enjoyed it.

◆Romeo et Juliet
Neumeier version. There at the beginning, Romeo leaned against the bed located in the right side and woke up then remembered his murder of Tybalt the night before with looking his hands...

Each time I was moved by this scene. I've seen this pdd by Benjamin several times then felt he was free to express himself in this version. Apparently he has deepened his drama since last summer, Etoile Gala.

Sylvia, has an ideal feature for this role, Juliet, a lovely face wtih middle-high, she looked like as a teenager. And in such dramatic ballet, she devoted to the role, expressing her sorrow for departing.

And both of them from different companies, they had really good partnership. What's a beautiful pdd!!

◆Herman Schmerman
Myself, not so much familiar to Forsyth's; full of keen off-balance and swinging-like steps as for his dancing vocabulary. Even now we see such similar steps in many modern pieces, still those are Forsyth's. There Eleonora was free to express with her flexibly, really distinctive and beautiful.

On the other hand, Patrick de Bana didn't look as Forsyth dancer, I dared to say; a bit stiff in his lines. But his dance left different atmospheres with his partner Eleonora. His very mannish and steady body was well contrast by her flexibility and created two dimensions; light and dark, soft and hard so on. very interesting mood.

to be continued

MessagePosté le: Mar Déc 30, 2008 9:16 am    Sujet du message: The picture of .... a new sofo of Manuel Legris Répondre en citant

At last a new solo of Manuel Legris.
According to his message to this Gala, he's been longing for a new solo for himself. We were very honored to see it here in Tokyo.
Citation:
"The Picture of ... "
Choreograph Patrick de Bana
Music Henry Purcell
Dido and Aeneas the Aria of Act Ⅲ

It is a new creation by Patrick de Bana and more a new world of Manuel Legris, I think.

He is very famous for his marvellous ballet technique which brings various nuances and deep emotion in each role. Then with his brilliant dance he's absorbed many ballet styles; M. Ek, Kylian, Duato, T. Brown ... so on and created his own world. But still there I sense his basement; light and clear steps, beautiful lines and forums, that's his charming point, I think.

But this new solo is different.

At first under darkness with the blue back, he appeared just as a silhouette with his T-shirt turned back and put it on his head. It looked like a head of something with a back sound "coo coo". Later ( at the after party ), he told it was a see-animal; Whale.

For a while he moved with this sound then a music started; a farewell aria from "Dido and Aeneas" by H. Purcell. There how do I say ? I don't mean shocked, just say got a counter punch. Contrary to a beautiful slow tempo song, he did brisk movement. But his feet were mainly on the floor. No batterie, no classic turns there ( just at the end petite saut, one or two )

Patrick de Bana told his inspiration came from mainly Kabuki; his favourite was Tamasaburo and he put some image of japan to this creation. Yes, sure I saw some of that image in his steps - closing feet by hands, sliding movements. But myself felt some influences from Martial Art (Japanese Budo), especially in "torse and mains" of Legris (upper body and arms). Those choreograph deprived him of his elevation up to the sky and brought some tension inside him; it seemed like the inner power was about to explode; but still gentle and calm on surface... very interesting.

It is a new world, his contemporary world.
No choreographer can't do that before. And with this solo Manuel Legris launches into his new phase, I think.

At the end, he did his left hand shake to us; it looked like a "Good-Bye", but I'm not sure. With doing so, he retreated into the darkness again and the blue back held him then only his silhouette remained there. This blue lighting was so beautiful.

There what he would express...? a deep cry or a desire for being free...? The birth and the end of one dancer? Myself, it seemed to start from a birth, but later he denied that. And about it's title "The picture of ..." why... ...? impressive silhouettes looked like a picture, I say. maybe.. each free to feel that.

I just hope many of you will see his solo in future and feel it by yourselves.

you see some more pictures on this site (Dance Square - photograph site)
