Citation:
I cannot concern myself with the rotation of the bosses, says Alexandrova. They do what they want and then they leave, but I am still here.

Citation:
Monday night’s audience loved it, and so evidently did the dancers. The big disappointment, though, was our star ballerina, Maria Alexandrova, not the most charming or sexy of Kitris

Citation:
Svetlana Zakharova has had her ups and downs on the London stage, but in Swan Lake she has always produced grand-scale ballerina performances.

Citation:
The rebirth of the Bolshoi
It's been a turbulent decade for Russia's finest. But with a new artistic director at the helm, the company has finally landed on its feet

La renaissance du Bolchoï, par Zoe Anderson

Citation:
Bolshoi dances around Cervantes with gusto and passion

Citation:
Maria Alexandrova is a rising star at the Bolshoi, but her Kitri is brassily short of nuance. She has an elegant physique, with long legs and a long neck, and she jumps and turns triumphantly. But she doesn't do much to engage with her partner and she's careless with the music.

The Telegraph

Sunny smiles and sorry seducers

Ismene Brown reviews the Bolshoi Ballet at Covent Garden

Citation:
Kitri is a firecracker of a role, and Maria Alexandrova is a real opening-night girl, with powerful legs and breathtaking jumps, needle-sharp turns, and a large and vivacious smile. Not a shred of 19th-century allure does she have; she looks like a gorgeous modern girl who earns more than her boyfriend, and Sergei Filin, a courteous and handsome Basil, gave in gracefully to her. It's been a while since the Bolshoi (Russian for "big") had such a "bolshoi" ballerina.

Other dancers, like Ekaterina Shipulina leading the "dream" ballet, also dance "bolshoi" but lack Alexandrova's interesting mix of jazzy blatancy and occasional fastidious surprises. Alexandrova might suit Balanchine. The ballerina I really wanted to see as Kitri was wonderful Maria Allash, the sensually light-footed Street Dancer.

I think Ms Brown gave good picture of Alexandrova's Kitry, and explain, why some London critics dont understand Masha in the role. I suppose London people like "good girls" who suit their notions about aristicratic ballerinas of the 19 century, whereas Alexandrova gave more modern rendition and show real innkeeper daughter, simple girl who can work and earn. I suppose it close to Gorsky's traditions but it's not an image some people used to.

ARTS: Don Quixote Royal Opera House, London CLEMENT CRISP
By Clement Crisp
Financial Times; Jul 21, 2004

Citation:
Maria Alexandrova was Kitri, brilliant in step, with diamantine points, vivid legs, brightest effects and, withal, a winning manner to beguile both us and her Basilio, Sergey Filin. He is a clean, elegant virtuoso, cooler than many another interpreter but charming, quick-witted in dramatic playing. The classical numbers were done with élan: Ksenia Tsareva has a deliciously light jump; and the dryad scene was as pretty as can be. The Hispanic jinks could not have been higher - Maria Allash is adorably the Street Dancer - and I salute Viktor Alekhin's spindle-shanked Gamache, with his wonky knee and his heron's walk, and Alexey Loparevich as a noble Don and Alexander Petukhov as a funny and endearing Sancho. All in all, a most happy start to the season.

Merci Inga,

Bolshoi Ballet ‘Don Quixote’

July 2004
London, Covent Garden

© Jeffery Taylor
Former dancer, Critic and an Arts feature writer for the Sunday Express. Pub 25 07 2004

Citation:
The ballet was Don Quixote, the company was Moscow's Bolshoi Ballet and the latest sensation is young Maria Alexandrova. Following 9 years of turmoil since the sacking of legendary director, Yuri Grigorovich, the Bolshoi is bidding to reclaim its jewel-in-Russia's-cultural-crown status from its rival, St Petersburg's Kirov Ballet. Former dancer and choreographer Alexei Ratmansky, 36, with an extensive Western experience, is the forward thinking new director, and his secret weapon is 24-year-old, Alexandrova. Mind you little is mysterious about the Muscovite missile as she hurtles on stage as heroine Kitri. She is big in every way; on pointe, taller than her partner Sergei Filin (Basil), and so exuberant a jump she seems to leap out his arms instead of into them. She gambles outrageously with her powerful technique, certain in the knowledge she has us in the palm of her hand.

Thanks a lot Inga!

Citation:
The two casts I saw pointed up the contrast between new and old styles. Maria Alexandrova, recently promoted to principal, was the first-night Kitri: her glossy technique and equally shiny smile barely compensated for the blandness of her interpretation. Still essentially a soloist, she hasn't yet grasped how to play with a fan or a man.

Galina Stepanenko, more experienced, treated the tricksy choreography as fun. A team player, she responded to the action around her and to her attentive partner, Yuri Klevtsov. They brought the ballet riotously to life after the first night's somewhat stilted account.

Romeo and Juliet
Royal Opera House, London

Luke Jennings
Wednesday July 28, 2004
The Guardian

Citation:
Of the protagonists, only Alexandrova's disco-bunny Juliet is able to build any kind of character, forcing life into Poklitaru's inert choreography by her sheer force of will. Savin's Romeo does his best, but comes across as if he were Gareth from The Office, and he is unconvincingly roused to a frenzy of stabbing when Denis Medvedev's spivvy Tybalt murders Yuri Klevtsov's cross-dressing Mercutio.

<....>

That the production ever saw the light of day suggests a troubling lack of discrimination on the part of Alexei Ratmansky, the Bolshoi's new director. His dancers clearly saw the way the wind was blowing - of the 13 principals on this tour, only Alexandrova has had anything to do with it. The single star rating above this review is hers. For valour.

Citation:
The leading performances are all sparky and magnetic, the urchin Maria Alexandrova and rosy-cheeked Denis Savin as the lovers, Denis Medvedev, Yuri Klevtsov and Ilze Liepa as the supporting trio.
But positives run out just as we reach the central element. The choreography looks as if Poklitaru fast-forwarded videos of the ballroom dances in Matthew Bourne's Swan Lake, and reckoned he could do this. He can't. The adult chorus/crowd is adequately manipulated, but the lovers, far from soaring over them, become quite ridiculous whenever alone together...
