Often a Swan, Rarely a Queen, par Roslyn Sulcas - The New-York Times (16 décembre 2007)

Citation:
The truth is that Ballerina Land remains privileged terrain. Within the dance world ballerina denotes an exceptional dancer of principal rank, not just anyone in point shoes. Most of the dancers who reach the top companies will spend the bulk of their dancing lives in the corps de ballet. The term, which means “body of the ballet,” refers to the dancers who work mostly in a group, undifferentiated from one another. (In some 19th-century ballets the corps women are deliberately identical figures — Wilis, swans, spirits — a kind of collective echo of the heroine and her plight.)

“Sometimes you feel like you are just part of the scenery,” said Cécile Sciaux, a Paris Opera Ballet sujet (a rank that is part soloist, part corps member). “The military aspect — the discipline, the straight lines, doing everything at the same time, the lack of individuality — can be harder to accept as you get older.”

Citation:
Mr. Bel’s work offers a rare and penetrating glimpse at the reality of major classical ballet companies, in which most dancers are not stars and rarely find the spotlight upon them. But to get to that point — of standing motionless in serried lines on one of the world’s great stages — is a passage as long and arduous as that of the principals before them.

Of course “Véronique Doisneau” (which Mr. Bel has recreated for two other companies, using their dancers and histories) offers a neat twist to the tale: Ms. Doisneau, a symbol of the many, has had her moment at center stage.

Citation:
Speaking on Friday from Orange County, Calif., where he is choreographing a new work for the ballerina Diana Vishneva, to be seen in New York this month at City Center, Mr. Ratmansky said he would not renew his contract with the Bolshoi when it ran out at the end of the year and intended to focus on choreography.

“My contract expires at the end of 2008 in Moscow, and I will probably still be a choreographer or guest choreographer with them, but not a director,” he said. “I want to choreograph more at different places — and to concentrate on that — because directorship really takes two-thirds of my time.” He quickly added, “I mean more” than two-thirds.

At City Ballet, Mr. Ratmansky said, he will have the opportunity to “learn a lot and develop further as a choreographer.”

“It could have been some other place just as well,” he continued. “They asked.”

Citation:
In Denmark Mr. Hübbe intends to spend as much time as possible in the studio, where, he stressed, artistic development begins. “I intend to be very hands-on,” he said. “I will want to live in there with them and for them. And I think that will be a big change for the company.”

At the moment Mr. Hübbe is hesitant to reveal many details about the future of the Royal Danish Ballet. It is too early to discuss plans for new productions, he said, adding that at some point he would love to hire a resident choreographer. While he embraces modernism, his point of view is that the Royal Danish Ballet should not stray from its tradition as a storytelling company.

“I’m certainly not going to go in and say, ‘O.K., throw away your point shoes and let’s all redefine Bournonville through the Graham technique,’ ” he said. “I think that would be absolutely ridiculous.” But he does assert that the Royal Danish Ballet needs to move on from its past.

“I love and adore August Bournonville,” he said. “I have the greatest respect for him, but he is my great-grandfather. We have to exist in the world as it is now, and so I think the definition of the Royal Danish Ballet will have to fit the cloth that we are made of. We cannot be so dogmatic. It’s terrible if the looming shadow of your great-grandfather becomes a crutch, or a cross to bear. Therefore we should say: ‘Thank you, Grandpa, you’re the best. We run it now.’ ”

He snapped his fingers. “People will say that I don’t like him or I don’t understand him,” he said. “I do understand and like him. I grew up with those steps and with those ballets, and I have a huge, vast sensitivity and sensibility for them.”

L'hommage d'Alastair Macauley dans le New-York Times: A Godlike Dancer’s Company Farewell Keeps Adventures Rolling to the End

Citation:
We hope the leading men of ballet will be heroes, poets, gods. Mr. Hübbe is all of these, and he is also both a dreamboat and a hunk. He’s also a load of fun. He ended this farewell by dancing the cowboy in the final movement of Balanchine’s “Western Symphony” (partnering Maria Kowroski), and letting us know quite how American his life in ballet has let him become. Charm, humor, glee, mischief, lovability: he has them all. And his kissing business with Ms. Kowroski by the wings will linger in the annals of this ballet as firmly as his colloquy with the Coquette will haunt “La Sonnambula.”

Afterward, one ballerina after another (including Kyra Nichols, who bade her own farewell to the company last June) presented Mr. Hübbe with bouquets onstage; Heather Watts and Damian Woetzel threw further flowers. Mr. Woetzel and Mr. Martins were the foremost of the many male colleagues who joined and applauded the hero of the day.

Now Mr. Hübbe goes on to become artistic director of the Royal Danish Ballet. Who could not wish him well, or not imagine his virtues lighting up that company? But the gap he leaves in New York is a mighty one and cannot readily be filled.
